The Allure of the Unseen Coast
George’s personal project to chart the entire Cornish coastline from sea level has provided him with a unique perspective on its hidden treasures. He notes that despite its proximity to many UK residents, the coastline remains a largely unexplored frontier. His expeditions have led him to discover numerous sea caves and secluded beaches, many of which require specialized access methods like abseiling, boat, or paddleboard, or the adventurous pursuit of coasteering.
While many of Cornwall’s famous beaches are experiencing increased visitor numbers, partly due to social media exposure, George highlights that true seclusion is becoming a rarity. He points out that popular spots like Kynance Cove, while beautiful, often draw significant crowds.
Standout Coastal Discoveries
Among the many beaches George has visited, a few have particularly captured his attention. He mentions Godrevy Cove on the Lizard Peninsula as a pleasant surprise. Its east-facing orientation makes it ideal for morning visits and offers shelter from westerly winds. Crucially, the absence of direct road access helps to keep visitor numbers manageable.
Another notable location is Bedruthan Steps on the north coast. While the primary access path from the National Trust car park has unfortunately collapsed, making it inaccessible via that route, an alternative pathway exists at the northern end. For those willing to undertake the short scramble down, the reward is a vast sandy beach framed by towering cliffs and the iconic Bedruthan sea stacks.
Nanjizal Beach: A Personal Favourite
Despite the allure of many stunning locations, one beach holds a particularly special place in Matt George’s heart: Nanjizal Beach, also known as Mill Bay. Situated a short walk from Land’s End along the South West Coast Path, Nanjizal is best experienced at low tide with minimal swell to reveal its full sandy expanse.
The Enchanting Landscape of Nanjizal
The setting at Nanjizal is described as simply gorgeous. Golden granite cliffs form a dramatic backdrop, culminating in the impressive Carn Boel. On the southern side of the cove lies the highly photographed ‘Song of the Sea’ archway, which typically shelters a calm pool perfect for a refreshing dip, shielded from the ocean’s force.
Access and Amenities
Nanjizal Beach is accessible only via the South West Coast Path, meaning there is no direct parking available. Visitors will need to park at designated points and enjoy a scenic walk to reach the cove. While there are no facilities directly on the beach, the path leading down to the sand is well-maintained, featuring wooden steps for easier descent. The beach is also dog-friendly, making it a suitable destination for those traveling with pets.
