From $90K Accountant to Couch Flipper: A Young Entrepreneur’s Success

Published on

A 24-year-old Melbourne man has traded a lucrative accounting career for the unpredictable world of reselling second-hand furniture, finding unexpected success by focusing on Facebook Marketplace. Bailey Garbett, who was on the cusp of becoming a Chartered Accountant and earning approximately $90,000 annually, made the bold decision in May to leave his stable corporate job to pursue his passion for furniture restoration and resale full-time.

A Bold Career Pivot

Garbett’s career trajectory initially pointed towards a traditional path in finance. After completing his accounting degree and gaining experience in audits and bankruptcy, he was just one exam away from achieving his Chartered Accountant qualification. However, the demanding hours, long commutes, and mounting stress of his role at a major Australian accounting firm led to increasing burnout. This realization culminated during his daily train commute, sparking an epiphany about his professional future.

‘I just thought, “What am I doing?”‘ Garbett recalled. ‘I’ve always wanted to work for myself, so I’m just going to bet on myself for once and have a crack.’ This introspection led him to explore entrepreneurial ventures, inspired by online content creators who were successfully flipping furniture.

The Birth of a Couch-Flipping Business

The idea of reselling furniture, particularly couches, had already taken root as a profitable side hustle. Garbett discovered the concept through an online creator and saw potential in the Australian market. He began sourcing unwanted lounges from Facebook Marketplace in September of the previous year, utilizing his ute and his father’s shed for storage and restoration work. Initially, it was a way to fill time and earn extra money during the off-season for his sporting activities.

Convincing his parents of this unconventional career change required a strategic approach. Applying his accounting skills, Garbett prepared a detailed PowerPoint presentation outlining his business plan, projected profits, and the financial viability of his venture. This data-driven presentation ultimately reassured his parents, who then supported his decision.

From Side Hustle to Full-Time Venture

Garbett meticulously tracked his expenses and sales, realizing the significant profit potential in restoring and reselling couches. He calculated that flipping approximately 15 couches per month, even conservatively, could match his previous accounting salary. His average profit per couch hovers around $400, though some sales have yielded considerably more.

One of his most successful flips involved a large L-shaped lounge. The family selling it needed it gone quickly, allowing Garbett to acquire it at a favorable price. After a thorough cleaning and staging with improved photographs, the couch sold within four days, generating a profit of around $850.

However, the business is not without its challenges. Garbett shared an experience with a chaise lounge that appeared pristine online but was heavily stained upon inspection. Despite extensive cleaning efforts, he eventually sold it at a loss. This experience underscored the importance of careful inspection and learning from mistakes, noting, ‘You’ve got to have the bad ones to know which ones are the good ones.’

Keys to Success in Furniture Resale

Through his growing experience, Garbett has identified key factors that contribute to successful furniture flipping. He found that neutral-colored fabric lounges tend to sell more quickly than leather options. Additionally, recognizing premium brands like Moran and Arthur G, which can often be acquired for a fraction of their market value due to sellers’ lack of awareness, is crucial.

His daily routine now involves a continuous cycle of sourcing, cleaning, photographing, and delivering furniture. Some days are dedicated to collecting multiple items, while others are spent on detailed cleaning, meeting potential buyers, or coordinating logistics.

The Role of Customer Service and Logistics

A significant factor in closing sales, according to Garbett, is offering free delivery within a reasonable radius of his home. ‘People can’t be bothered hiring trailers or organising Airtaskers, so free delivery gets a lot of deals over the line,’ he explained. This added convenience often proves to be the deciding factor for customers.

The initial investment for Garbett’s business amounted to approximately $5,000. This covered essential equipment such as a trailer, cleaning supplies, dollies, and storage solutions, especially as his inventory outgrew his father’s shed.

A Happier, More Fulfilling Path

While the entrepreneurial path involves inherent uncertainty compared to a fixed corporate salary, Garbett reports being happier and more fulfilled. He values the autonomy and flexibility that comes with being his own boss, even though he misses the camaraderie of his former colleagues.

‘I definitely miss the people I worked with, but I have so much more time to do what I want now,’ he stated.

For aspiring entrepreneurs considering a similar leap, Garbett’s advice is straightforward: ‘You’ve just got to start.’ He emphasizes that extensive research is valuable, but practical experience is irreplaceable. ‘You can do heaps of research, but you’re never really going to know unless you actually give it a go.’

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Garbett remains open to possibilities. He still intends to complete his Chartered Accountant qualification eventually, but only if it aligns with his business’s trajectory. ‘If this takes off, maybe I won’t go back, but for now, I’m just focused on turning over as many couches as I can.’ The growing online following documenting his couch-flipping journey suggests that this unconventional career bet might indeed be his most successful investment to date.
