Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend has voiced skepticism regarding Arsenal’s reported interest in Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, suggesting that current Arsenal player Gabriel Martinelli represents a superior option. Townsend’s comments come as Arsenal are reportedly seeking to strengthen their left-wing position this summer, following the departure of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for £17 million.

Arsenal’s Winger Search and Transfer Speculation

Arsenal have been actively pursuing reinforcements, having already confirmed the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, and free agent Illan Meslier. Earlier in the transfer window, the club had reportedly explored the possibility of acquiring Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, with manager Mikel Arteta said to be highly impressed by the prospect. However, Vinicius Junior ultimately signed a new contract with Real Madrid, prompting Arsenal to consider alternative targets. Among those mentioned are Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz and PSG’s Bradley Barcola.

The pursuit of Barcola, a 23-year-old French international, has reportedly hit a significant financial hurdle. PSG is understood to be unwilling to part with the player easily and has allegedly placed a staggering £145 million price tag on him. Liverpool is also reported to be interested in Barcola.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal’s longest-serving player, has himself been the subject of transfer speculation, with Turkish club Galatasaray reportedly making an approach. This situation has led Townsend to weigh in on Arsenal’s potential transfer strategy and player valuation.

Townsend’s Assessment of Barcola vs. Martinelli

Speaking on talkSPORT, Townsend addressed the rumors surrounding Martinelli and the potential for Arsenal to consider a transfer if a substantial offer were received. He acknowledged that while Arsenal might be open to a deal for Martinelli under certain financial conditions, he believes the club should prioritize retaining him.

Townsend expressed confusion over Arsenal’s rumored interest in Barcola, particularly given the immense fee PSG is reportedly demanding. He stated, “I totally got going for Vinicius Junior but I don’t get going for just another one.” This sentiment highlights his belief that Barcola may not be the transformative signing Arsenal might be seeking, especially at such a high cost.

The former England international was particularly critical of PSG’s valuation of Barcola, questioning whether the player’s current ability justifies the £145 million asking price. “I don’t see Barcola at the sort of levels that others do, clearly. I don’t see him at anything like that sort of money, I really don’t,” Townsend remarked. He further elaborated by comparing Barcola unfavorably to other emerging talents, suggesting that players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue are significantly better prospects.

Townsend’s primary concern lies with Barcola’s perceived lack of consistent end product, which he believes does not warrant such an exorbitant fee. “I don’t think he’s got the end product in his game to warrant £145m, no chance,” he asserted. Consequently, Townsend stated unequivocally that he would not advocate for swapping Martinelli for Barcola.

Why Martinelli is the Preferred Choice

Townsend’s preference for Martinelli is rooted in the Brazilian winger’s proven track record and established value within the Premier League. “I don’t think I’d swap Martinelli for him, I don’t think I would. Honestly,” he declared. Townsend emphasized Martinelli’s familiarity with the English league and his demonstrated contributions to Arsenal’s success.

“Martinelli knows this division, he’s proven himself now to be a valuable member of Arsenal’s team,” Townsend explained. He concluded that a potential transfer for Barcola, considering the massive investment required, would not represent a significant upgrade over the existing option in Martinelli. This perspective suggests that Arsenal should focus on developing and retaining their current talent rather than pursuing a high-risk, high-cost acquisition.

Arsenal’s Youth Prospects and Upcoming Fixtures

Beyond the senior squad, Townsend also expressed interest in the development of Arsenal’s young talents, specifically mentioning Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri. Nwaneri recently scored in the team’s friendly defeat against Borussia Dortmund, highlighting his potential.

“It’ll be interesting to see if they are really active now in that position or whether or not they’re prepared to go with what they have,” Townsend mused, referring to the club’s potential transfer activity. “Max Dowman, it’s a big season for him coming up and Ethan Nwaneri, these boys.” This indicates a broader view of Arsenal’s squad building, considering both immediate needs and long-term player development.
