Mendoza’s Raiders QB Update: Cousins Remains Starter Despite Promising Debut

Published on

Fernando Mendoza has received an update on his quest for the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback position following his NFL preseason debut. While head coach Klint Kubiak acknowledged Mendoza’s encouraging performance, he confirmed that veteran Kirk Cousins remains the team’s presumptive starter. Mendoza, the Raiders’ No. 1 draft pick, saw his first game action in a 27-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, with Raiders minority owner Tom Brady observing from the sidelines.

Mendoza’s Preseason Debut

The highly anticipated debut of Fernando Mendoza in a Raiders uniform occurred during the preseason opener against the Cardinals. Mendoza, who was selected as the top overall pick in the NFL Draft, entered the game after Kirk Cousins had already started. Cousins completed 5 of 6 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown before Mendoza took the field. The young quarterback finished his outing by completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards, notably throwing his first career NFL touchdown to fellow rookie Jack Bech.

Despite the positive moments, including the touchdown pass, Mendoza was unsparing in his self-assessment after the game. “Unfortunately, I let my teammates down today,” Mendoza stated. “But it’s a growing experience. I feel like we’re all growing and it helped me show that I need to grow a lot.” He expressed his intention to meticulously review game film to identify areas for improvement.

Kubiak’s Assessment and QB Hierarchy

Head coach Klint Kubiak offered a measured perspective on Mendoza’s performance and the ongoing quarterback competition. “Kirk’s been getting the reps with the ones. I think he’s had a solid training camp and it’s his job to lose,” Kubiak said, reaffirming Cousins’ status. Regarding Mendoza, Kubiak noted his contribution to a scoring drive and saw potential for growth. “As far as getting in and out of the huddle, commanding the group, getting the play calls down, I saw the same guy I see in practice. I saw an ascending player who’s got to keep getting better,” Kubiak elaborated.

The Raiders’ strategic approach to the quarterback position was established with the signing of Kirk Cousins. The team secured the veteran quarterback with a five-year, $172 million contract, structured as a one-year, fully guaranteed $20 million deal with team options for subsequent seasons. This significant investment underscores the team’s initial plan, with Cousins entering training camp as the established starter.

Cousins’ Perspective on Mendoza

Kirk Cousins also shared his thoughts on Fernando Mendoza’s initial foray into the NFL. He offered praise for the rookie’s performance, stating, “He did a great job. He moved the football, he scored points, gave us a chance to score points and operated well.” Cousins’ comments suggest a supportive dynamic between the veteran and the highly touted rookie.

Tom Brady’s Influence and Mendoza’s Mentorship

The presence of Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders, added a notable element to Mendoza’s debut. Brady, who was instrumental in the decision to draft Mendoza, was observed on the sidelines. Prior to the draft, Brady had spoken highly of Mendoza’s potential, emphasizing his leadership qualities. “I love everything about his game. His leadership is what stands out. His relatability to his teammates. He’s overcome a lot of things in his career,” Brady had said.

Mendoza himself has spoken about the guidance he has received from Brady since joining the Raiders. He has previously mentioned that Brady advises him to focus on making decisions that best serve his teammates and contribute to his development as a quarterback. Brady’s emphasis on leadership and team-oriented play appears to be a core part of the mentorship he offers the young player.

Looking Ahead for the Raiders’ Quarterback Room

While Fernando Mendoza’s preseason debut showcased flashes of potential and earned him praise from his head coach and veteran teammate, the starting quarterback job remains Kirk Cousins’. The Raiders are adopting a patient approach with their top draft pick, allowing him to develop under the guidance of Kubiak and Cousins. Mendoza’s self-critical assessment and commitment to improvement, coupled with the team’s investment in Cousins, set the stage for an ongoing evaluation of the quarterback position throughout the preseason and into the regular season.

The team’s strategy prioritizes stability with the experienced Cousins leading the offense, while simultaneously nurturing the long-term development of Mendoza. This dual approach aims to balance immediate competitive needs with the cultivation of future talent, a process closely watched by team leadership, including Tom Brady.
