AFL Star Kane Cornes Faces Backlash Over Swans Premiership Comments

Published on

Former AFL player Kane Cornes has drawn significant criticism for prioritizing the potential impact on Sydney Swans’ premiership aspirations over the welfare of an alleged victim of sexual assault. Cornes’ remarks, made on Channel Seven’s ‘The Front Bar’ on Monday night, focused on the football ramifications should an alleged incident at a Melbourne hotel affect the team’s finals campaign.

Focus on Football Consequences Sparks Outrage

The controversy emerged after several Sydney Swans players voluntarily spoke with police following a report of a sexual assault at the Pullman East Melbourne hotel. Victoria Police confirmed they are investigating the incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. While no arrests have been made and no wrongdoing has been alleged against the players who assisted with inquiries, the situation has cast a shadow over the Swans’ strong season.

Cornes, an AFL premiership winner, stated on air, “What the future holds for those players remains to be seen. But if I was a teammate of one of those and it had the prospect of costing us potentially a premiership, I’m not sure I would ever forgive them.” This comment immediately drew fire from sports presenter and digital creator Lavender Baj.

Criticism Mounts: Victim’s Welfare vs. Premiership Hopes

Lavender Baj strongly condemned Cornes’ perspective, accusing him of elevating the Swans’ flag hopes above the seriousness of the alleged sexual assault. She argued that the potential consequences for the alleged victim should be the paramount concern, not speculation about the team’s performance in the upcoming finals series.

“Now I am not asserting that anyone is guilty or innocent, we don’t know the severity of the allegations,” Baj stated. “What I do know, as former journalist and person with at least one functioning brain cell, is that in instances of allegations of sexual assault, the sexual assault part is always more important than the Swans finals fixture.”

Baj expressed frustration with media coverage that focused on the potential disruption to the AFL season or fantasy sports leagues. “For the love of God, can we take one second to think about the alleged victim who has come forward saying that they were allegedly sexually assaulted. That it is now reading headlines about how it is going to devastate the Swans finals fixture, use your brain I beg you.”

Player Involvement and Police Inquiry

Several Sydney Swans players, including Isaac Heeney, James Jordon, Chad Warner, and Riley Bice, voluntarily spoke with police as part of their inquiries into the alleged incident. It is important to note that these players have not been accused of any wrongdoing, and the investigation is ongoing. The club has stated they are “extremely shocked and disappointed” and are cooperating with authorities while conducting their own internal review.

Broader AFL Commentary on the Incident

The alleged incident and its potential impact on the Swans have been a major talking point across AFL media. On Kayo Sports’ ‘AFL 360’, former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon described the situation as an “unmitigated disaster” for the club and the league. He lamented that the focus was shifting away from the team’s strong performance, which had secured them a home qualifying final and a likely top-two finish.
