Josh Radnor on HIMYM Cast: ‘Not Even a Little Bit’ Close

Published on

Josh Radnor, the star of the beloved sitcom How I Met Your Mother, has shared candid insights into the current relationships among the show’s cast, revealing that they are not as close as fans might imagine, even 12 years after the series concluded. Radnor, who portrayed the central character Ted Mosby, admitted that despite the show’s deep focus on friendship, the bonds forged on set have not translated into lasting, close personal relationships off-screen.

Cast Relationships Post-HIMYM

Speaking on the Half the Picture podcast, Radnor, 52, directly addressed questions about the cast’s current closeness. “No, not even a little bit,” he stated, quickly clarifying that his remarks were not meant to be dramatic. He likened the experience to college, where intense daily interaction during formative years doesn’t always lead to lifelong friendships once students graduate and pursue separate lives.

“It’s like college where you have this very intense time together and you… can’t imagine not seeing each other every day because you’ve seen each other every day for so long,” Radnor explained. “And then it just disperses and you just go out and live your life.” He emphasized that while he holds affection for his former colleagues, their relationships are not actively maintained on a day-to-day basis. “So yeah, I’m living my life… I have love for all these people.”

Individual Cast Interactions

Radnor elaborated on his interactions with specific cast members since the show wrapped in 2014. He recently reunited with Neil Patrick Harris, who played Barney Stinson, on Radnor’s rewatch podcast, How We Made Your Mother. This conversation, which aired on March 16, delved into past on-set dynamics. “He and I had a really interesting conversation about some of the tension we had on set that was, like, fascinating and kind of healing,” Radnor noted.

Cobie Smulders, who portrayed Robin Scherbatsky, has also appeared on Radnor’s podcast. However, their interactions have largely been virtual. “So I’ve seen her mostly on Zoom,” Radnor mentioned.

Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin, was invited to Radnor’s 2024 wedding to Jordana Jacobs. Despite the invitation, which occurred during a significant New York blizzard, Radnor stated he had not seen her since that event.

Regarding Jason Segel, who starred as Marshall Eriksen, Radnor indicated a slightly more consistent, albeit distant, connection. “We still send each other texts every once in a while,” Radnor said, “but I haven’t seen him in a really long time.”

Radnor did not specifically mention Cristin Milioti, who played Tracy McConnell, the titular mother revealed in the series finale. The final episode, despite its controversial reception among some fans, still drew a substantial audience of 13.13 million viewers.

The Nature of On-Set Relationships

Radnor further reflected on the unique nature of relationships formed during long-running television productions. He described the cast dynamic as being “a little more like family than friends in that you don’t get to choose your family.” He elaborated that the cast were brought together by the production, rather than choosing each other organically. “We were cast. We didn’t choose each other,” he stated.

He suggested that the intense environment of a long-term show can bring out complex “family dynamics.” While acknowledging the existence of deep, potentially everlasting love for his castmates, he characterized it as “not an active love.” This implies a sense of enduring care and respect that doesn’t necessitate constant contact or the maintenance of close friendships.

Fan Expectations vs. Reality

Radnor understands why fans might expect the How I Met Your Mother cast to remain close. The sitcom’s core premise revolved around a tight-knit group of friends navigating life and love in New York City. “I think it’s a little more like family than friends in that you don’t get to choose your family,” Radnor said, echoing his earlier sentiment. “The family dynamics come out to play when you’re in, you know, an environment like that for so long. But you also have love that is quite deep and rich and probably everlasting, but it’s not an active love.”

The show, which aired for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014, remains a popular series, available for streaming on platforms like Hulu and Disney+. Despite the lack of close personal ties among the main cast members today, the enduring popularity of How I Met Your Mother continues to resonate with audiences.

Beyond HIMYM: Radnor’s Current Endeavors

Since the conclusion of How I Met Your Mother, Josh Radnor has pursued various projects. He has continued his acting career, appeared in the spin-off How I Met Your Father (though not as his original character), and engaged in other creative ventures. His recent work includes performing at a HIMYM-themed fundraiser for pediatric cardiology research and preparing for his upcoming “Evening With” show in New York City. He is also set to appear in a new mockumentary comedy series, Mt. Mystic Rangers.

Radnor’s candidness about the cast’s relationships offers a realistic perspective on the bonds formed in the entertainment industry, highlighting that while professional connections can be profound, they don’t always evolve into the deep personal friendships often depicted on screen.
