Fred Sirieix, known for his role in the popular television series First Dates, recently recounted a harrowing experience during a bushwalk in South Africa where he found himself caught between a formidable elephant and two rhinos. The incident, which occurred while filming for his new Channel 4 travel show, Fred’s Ultimate Hotels, underscored the critical importance of experienced guides in navigating the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters.
A Close Call on Safari
The terrifying event unfolded during a walking safari near The Royal Madikwe Lodge, a luxury establishment situated close to the South African and Botswana border. Sirieix was part of a group exploring the wilderness when the situation escalated rapidly. “We went on a bush walk, and basically what happened is we got sandwiched between one elephant and two rhinos,” Sirieix explained, emphasizing the perilous nature of their predicament.
This alarming encounter served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in close proximity to wild animals and highlighted the vital role of skilled guides. Sirieix elaborated on the territorial instincts of creatures like elephants and rhinos, noting their tendency to react aggressively when feeling threatened or when their space is encroached upon. “They don’t want you there, the animals, they don’t think that you should be there and they are very territorial,” he stated. “So if you’re in front of the water or there or whatever, they just charge.”
The Heroic Actions of Ernie
It was during this critical moment that safari guide Ernie demonstrated exceptional bravery and expertise. Sirieix credited Ernie with skillfully managing the situation and ensuring the safety of the entire group without resorting to any form of aggression or weaponry. “Ernie came into his own, the guide, because it’s all about their training and knowing how to read an animal,” Sirieix said. “So he managed to scare them. Without using a gun or anything, just his arms and whatever he was doing, and they left,” he recalled.
Sirieix’s profound gratitude for Ernie’s actions led him to select the guide for his Hospitality Hero Award, a segment within Fred’s Ultimate Hotels that shines a spotlight on individuals who go above and beyond in the hospitality industry. The award ceremony clearly resonated deeply with Sirieix, who became visibly emotional when recounting the moment Ernie received his recognition.
An Emotional Tribute
Describing the scene, Sirieix shared, “Ernie in South Africa – the guy who saved my life in the bushwalk, where we had the near miss.” He continued, painting a picture of the guide’s reaction: “He was crying like a baby. He’s a mountain of a man, strong like an elephant, the heart of an elephant, he was crying, big tears, it was beautiful.” This heartfelt moment underscored the significant impact Ernie’s courage and professionalism had on Sirieix and the group.
