Anastasia Potapova’s US Open Journey Marred by Alleged Flight Incident

Published on

Russian-born tennis player Anastasia Potapova has publicly detailed a distressing experience aboard a United Airlines flight en route to the US Open, alleging mistreatment by a flight attendant. Potapova, currently ranked No. 28 in the world and set to compete as the 24th seed at the New York tournament, expressed her frustration and disappointment via social media, stating she felt compelled to speak out against what she described as “humiliating and disrespectful” treatment.

Potapova’s Account of the Flight

The incident reportedly occurred on flight UA678 from Houston to New York. Potapova, who recently switched her sporting nationality to Austrian, stated that she has extensive experience traveling globally as a professional athlete but had never encountered such a level of alleged rudeness and discrimination. She specifically named the flight attendant, identified as Mary, and claimed the individual repeatedly created difficulties for her and her dog without apparent provocation.

According to Potapova’s account, the flight attendant’s behavior was not only directed at her personally but also extended to how her dog was treated. Potapova further alleged that the attendant repeatedly referenced her status and even threatened to remove her from the flight. “I have never done anything like this before, but right now I simply cannot stay silent,” Potapova wrote on her Instagram Story. “As a professional athlete, I travel extensively all over the world, but this is the first time I have ever experienced this level of disrespect, rudeness, and, to some extent, discrimination.”

Potapova emphasized her belief that flight attendants are meant to assist passengers, not create obstacles. “To me, flight attendants are supposed to be there to help passengers, not create problems for them,” she stated. She concluded her initial public statement by urging United Airlines to investigate the matter seriously, asserting that “no passenger — and no animal — deserves to be treated in such a humiliating and disrespectful way, especially by a member of the cabin crew.”

Community Support and Airline Engagement

Following her public complaint, Potapova shared a screenshot of a message from a follower who claimed to have had a similar negative experience with the same flight attendant, suggesting this was not an isolated incident. The tennis star indicated that she was in communication with United Airlines regarding the situation and expressed appreciation for their prompt attention to the issue.

Potapova’s participation in the US Open is a significant point of focus for her season. She reached the second round of the tournament last year and achieved a career-best third-round appearance in 2024. Her performance this year has already included notable achievements, such as reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros after defeating Coco Gauff, and becoming the first lucky loser to advance to a WTA 1000 semifinal at the Madrid Open, where she ultimately lost to Marta Kostyuk.

Background and Personal Reflections

The incident comes at a time when Potapova is preparing for a major tournament. Earlier in the year, she experienced a significant personal event: the divorce from fellow tennis player Alexander Shevchenko. In a 2025 interview, she reflected on the decision, describing it as a “shockingly big decision” and acknowledging the difficulty of such life changes. She expressed well wishes for Shevchenko’s career, recognizing his talent.

Potapova also spoke about the mental fortitude required to navigate public scrutiny and personal challenges. She noted the curiosity of others regarding her divorce and the need to officially end the relationship to move forward. “I think I needed to put an end to it, to end things officially, so I wouldn’t get those questions anymore. I think that was the last step I needed to finally set myself free,” she remarked.

Looking Ahead to the US Open

Despite the alleged disruption during her travel, Potapova is focused on her upcoming matches at the US Open. As the 24th seed, she carries expectations into the Grand Slam event. Her recent successes, including her strong showing at the French Open and Madrid, indicate she is in competitive form. The resolution of her complaint with United Airlines, alongside her on-court performance, will be points of interest as the tournament progresses.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by athletes who travel frequently and the importance of respectful service during their journeys. Potapova’s decision to share her experience underscores a desire for accountability and improved standards in customer service within the travel industry, particularly for those in the public eye.
