Easts Rugby halfback Teddy Wilson has been cleared to play in the Shute Shield grand final against Warringah, following a brief scare that he might be called up to the Wallabies squad. The news came as a significant relief to Easts coach Ben Batger, who admitted to experiencing a moment of panic when informed that his star player was on standby for the national team’s tour of Argentina.
Wilson’s Wallabies Standby and Easts’ Relief
The potential call-up for Wilson arose after Wallabies halfbacks Ryan Lonergan and Tate McDermott sustained injuries during recent matches. Lonergan’s departure from the field in Jujuy on Sunday prompted the need for additional cover, placing Wilson on standby to join the squad in Mendoza. Coach Batger described the situation as a “heart attack” moment, highlighting the difficult position he was in.
“I was very torn because it was a potential chance for Teddy to make a Wallabies debut, but then you lose probably your most influential player for the grand final,” Batger explained. “At the end of the day my job is to help guys get to the next level, so I would have been happy for him, but sad for the team. Luckily, we didn’t have to go there.”
Fortunately for Easts, the situation was resolved quickly. Ryan Lonergan was subsequently cleared to play, and with Kalani Thomas already part of the Wallabies’ touring squad as the third-choice halfback, Wilson received the green light to remain with his club for the championship decider. “Statistically, he is unbelievable. He plays like a back-rower in defence. People don’t understand that. He makes 10 tackles per game, he can make a jackal, all that. I know everyone talks about his running game, but his defence, he is literally like we have a fourth back-rower on the field. That’s a massive advantage at any level, to have a halfback that tough,” he added. Wilson’s background also includes a stint as a former boxing champion.
Wilson’s father, David, is a notable figure in Australian rugby, having captained the Wallabies and won a World Cup during a distinguished 79-Test career as a back-rower. Despite any perceived criticisms of his kicking game, Batger defended Wilson, suggesting such critiques overlook his extensive strengths.
The 23-year-old’s commitment to Easts, demonstrated by his consistent presence at training and club activities during breaks from his Waratahs commitments, has a profound positive influence on his teammates. “And when he’s playing, the team just gets confidence when he is around,” Batger said. “He is almost like a cheat code – you’re guaranteed at least one line break per game or one incredible moment. On the weekend, it was his try-saving tackle that secured the win for us against Uni, him covering in behind. It is something many people don’t see or recognise – just how much work he can get through.”
Future Prospects and Rugby League Links
Wilson recently extended his contract with the Waratahs through to 2027. His background also includes playing junior rugby league for Manly until the age of 17. According to informed sources, his performances for NSW and Easts have also attracted the attention of several National Rugby League (NRL) clubs.
Key figures within the Rugby Australia-owned Waratahs organization are reportedly keen to retain Wilson, viewing him as a potential long-term Test player. His development is seen as being in the mold of Ryan Lonergan, who made his Wallabies debut at 26 and has since established himself as the team’s primary halfback. Wilson, who debuted for the Waratahs in 2022, has made 40 appearances for the NSW team but has only started 10 matches, often playing under or alongside Jake Gordon and Jack Grant.
