Emily Scolyer Cherishes Father’s Lasting Love After Cancer Battle

Published on

Emily Scolyer reflects with profound gratitude on the 22 years of unwavering love and support she received from her father, Richard Scolyer. A distinguished cancer researcher and a former Australian of the Year, Richard Scolyer passed away in June following a valiant fight against glioblastoma. Emily shared that her father infused every moment with magic and that she aspires to embody his deep appreciation for family, nature, and human connection.

A Father’s Enduring Presence

Despite a demanding professional career as a pathologist, Richard Scolyer was an exceptionally present father. Emily recounted how he consistently made time for family activities and offered unwavering support to her and her siblings. He was instrumental in teaching her fundamental life skills, such as swimming and riding a bicycle. Their shared experiences often involved hours spent at the wave pool, creating cherished memories.

The dedication of Richard Scolyer to his children was evident even in the early mornings. Emily recalled him waking at 5 a.m. three to four times a week to take her to swimming training. His commitment extended to attending all her significant events, including ballet concerts, swimming carnivals, athletics meets, and cross-country races. Emily marveled at how he managed to balance his professional responsibilities with such active participation in his children’s lives.

Even during the often-challenging teenage years, marked by typical parent-child friction, Richard Scolyer remained a constant source of support. Emily emphasized that he always showed up for her and consistently expressed his pride, regardless of her successes or setbacks. He was her foremost cheerleader, offering encouragement even when she faltered.

Lessons in Presence and Resilience

A core lesson Richard Scolyer imparted to his children was the profound importance of simply being present with loved ones. Emily noted that her father made every shared moment feel special, even periods of comfortable silence. This emphasis on presence, she explained, was a guiding principle he instilled, shaping her own values.

The initial signs of Richard Scolyer’s illness emerged during a trip overseas in 2023. While attending a conference in Poland with his wife, he experienced a seizure after a hike. Doctors speculated that the altitude may have contributed to brain swelling, a circumstance Emily viewed with a sense of bittersweet fortune. This event, she believes, led to the earlier-than-otherwise detection of his brain tumor.

Upon receiving the glioblastoma diagnosis, Richard Scolyer personally informed his children. Emily described her father’s voice on that call as sounding defeated, a tone she had never heard from him before. Known for his positivity and role as a steadfast supporter of others, hearing him express such vulnerability was deeply devastating for his family. The initial shock and shared tears soon transitioned into a focused approach to problem-solving and treatment.

A Legacy of Hope and Positivity

Richard Scolyer’s passing at the age of 59 marked the end of a life dedicated to people and the advancement of medical research. His legacy is defined by his pioneering work in cancer treatment and his remarkable ability to transform a devastating personal diagnosis into a source of inspiration for others facing similar health challenges. Emily highlighted her father’s extraordinary resilience, noting his daily commitment to maintaining a positive outlook and engaging in activities he loved, such as running, cycling, and spending time in nature, right up until his final days.

Emily likened the experience of grief to carrying a rock. Initially, it can feel like a large, jagged boulder, causing constant pain. However, she finds comfort in the idea that, over time, the sharp edges soften, and the rock becomes a smoother, more manageable presence—a positive touchstone rather than a source of acute suffering. Currently, her grief feels like that initial jagged boulder, but she holds onto the hope of its eventual transformation.

Honoring a Father’s Love

Emily expressed immense gratitude for having Richard Scolyer as her father. He exemplified unconditional love and support, demonstrating the profound importance of reliability and showing up for the people one cares about. These qualities, she stated, are central to the person she aspires to be.

The family plans to honor Richard Scolyer’s memory, particularly on Father’s Day, by sharing stories and spending time together outdoors with their dog, Cha Cha, a pet her father deeply loved. These moments, Emily noted, were always his favorite—simply being together.

To stay connected to her father’s spirit, Emily continues to engage in activities he cherished, including running, swimming, and participating in parkrun events. She often finds herself thinking of him during beautiful sunsets, imagining he had a hand in arranging them. While the desire for more time together is ever-present, Emily feels that the love and experiences shared over her 22 years with her father have provided her with a foundation that will last a lifetime.
