Donna, stepping into the role of custodian, has now seen this architectural gem, a piece of Australia’s cultural heritage, brought back to its former glory.

The Julian Rose House, a 72-year-old structure in Wahroonga, holds a special place in Australian architectural history. Designed by Harry Seidler, the cousin of Donna’s late husband Brian, the house is renowned for its adventurous cantilevered design, elevated 3.3 meters above the ground. Brian Seidler, who served as the executive director of the Master Builders Association, dedicated his evenings and weekends to meticulously restoring the home after purchasing it from previous owners. His widow, Donna, recalls his persistent belief that the project was nearing completion, a sentiment he had expressed for nearly eight years.
Faced with the daunting prospect of continuing Brian’s work, Donna initially felt overwhelmed. Donna, a human resources manager by profession and not an architect or builder, initially channeled her grief into physical labor. “I got the fire in me to get on the chainsaw,” she recounted. Tackling the overgrown weeds and bamboo surrounding both her own home and the Julian Rose House, she also acquired a motorized tree lopper and a lawn mower. This strenuous activity became a cathartic process, allowing her to process her sadness while simultaneously clearing a path, both literally and figuratively, towards the restoration project. “I felt like I was cutting a path up the hill to it,” she said.
Navigating the Restoration: Learning and Trusting Judgment
The passage of time since Brian’s death has been a complex experience for Donna, marked by moments that felt like an instant and others that stretched into what felt like centuries. Brian had envisioned the Julian Rose House as an educational resource for architects. Donna now plans to rent the restored house to individuals with a keen interest in architecture, aiming to fulfill Brian’s original aspiration.
When Donna took over, she had no prior construction experience. Her journey began with unfinished tiling in a bathroom, a task she approached by seeking guidance from online tutorials. She discovered specialized tools, like a grout finishing tool with a unique ball tip, that proved invaluable. Throughout the process, she constantly asked herself, “what would Brian do?” She meticulously studied his plans, drawings, and notes, striving to adhere closely to his intentions. “I have been following the drawings,” she stated. “There are little arrows pointing here and there… with questions like how high that should be.” Brian’s renowned attention to detail, extending to the smallest elements like nails, had contributed to the project’s lengthy duration.
Over time, Donna developed confidence in her own decision-making. While Brian had planned for an external laundry and a linen cupboard adjacent to the kitchen, Donna opted to integrate the laundry facilities within the house, a small but significant personal victory. She also faced the challenge of sourcing replacement parts for original steel window handles and thumb screws that had broken. As these were no longer manufactured, she found a fabricator capable of recreating them based on Harry Seidler’s original designs.

Its structural daring, particularly the elevated main floor supported by a double cantilevered steel structure, set it apart. Penelope Seidler, Harry Seidler’s widow, expressed her delight with the completed restoration. She commended Brian and Donna for their dedication to faithfully recreating Harry’s original design, stating, “We were absolutely thrilled that Brian bought the house, and took on the major job of restoration.” Donna’s successful completion of this demanding project stands as a powerful tribute to her late husband’s dream and a significant contribution to the preservation of Australia’s architectural heritage.
