Ray Winstone & Guy Ritchie: Settling Old Scores for ‘The Gentlemen’

Published on

Actor Ray Winstone has revealed the significant history and eventual reconciliation with director Guy Ritchie that preceded their collaboration on the Netflix series ‘The Gentlemen’. Despite Winstone’s extensive career in crime dramas, his role as Bobby in the acclaimed series marked his first professional venture with the distinctive filmmaker. The two men, both prominent figures in British cinema, had a notable falling out early in their careers, which Winstone detailed in recent interviews.

An Early Career Clash

Winstone’s initial connection with Ritchie was nearly a collaboration on the iconic 1998 film ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’. However, Winstone narrowly missed out on a role, and this near-miss was overshadowed by a significant personal dispute between the two. Speaking about the incident, Winstone explained that the disagreement stemmed from their younger years, describing it as a period of youthful arguments that led to a rift.

“We were younger kids, arguing, and kind of fell out,” Winstone recalled. He admitted that he continued to follow Ritchie’s burgeoning career with a sense of grudging admiration. “It’s a shame, because over the years I watched his films and, you know, begrudgingly liked them,” he added with a touch of humor.

Clearing the Air

The path to reconciliation and eventual collaboration was paved by mutual acquaintances. According to Winstone, friends encouraged him and Ritchie to meet and resolve their past differences. This intervention led to a conversation that mended their fractured relationship.

“We had a chat,” Winstone stated. He reflected on the maturity gained over time, suggesting it was a natural progression from youthful immaturity to a more adult perspective. “I suppose it’s part of growing up – becoming a man instead of a silly little boy. We had a little chat and a little hug, as you do in the film business.”

This resolution allowed Winstone to finally experience working with Ritchie, a prospect he found highly satisfying. He described the experience of filming ‘The Gentlemen’ as meeting his expectations and something he thoroughly enjoyed.

The Root of the Disagreement

Delving deeper into the specifics of their past conflict, Winstone shared with Esquire magazine the underlying reasons for his initial displeasure. The core issue revolved around the handling of a film production that was put on hold.

“When I was younger, something happened. I just didn’t like the way… the film was put on hold and I took umbrage to the fact that no one was told,” Winstone explained. He emphasized the impact such decisions have on the cast and crew, highlighting their financial responsibilities.

“These actors, this crew, have rents to pay. And if it’s been put on hold and the money’s not coming through for a film, tell everyone. They’ve got a choice then – go and find some more work or whatever,” he elaborated. Winstone felt that the lack of communication was unprofessional and disrespectful to those involved in the production.

He admitted that he voiced his strong opinion at the time, leading to further friction. “I just thought it was a liberty. I aired my opinion, said, ‘See you later.’ Then, we had words a bit later on. I didn’t like what he’d done. There’s a way of going about your business, and I’ve probably got the wrong end of the stick anyway. But anyway, it was done, it was said, move on.”

A Respected Filmmaker

Despite the past animosity, Winstone’s respect for Ritchie’s directorial talent grew over the years. He acknowledged the unique and recognizable style that defines a Guy Ritchie film, noting that the director remains true to his own vision without imitating others.

“Then you watch what he’s doing. You know a Guy Ritchie film when you watch it. He’s not copying anyone. He does what he does, and the more you get to know him, the more challenging you realise he is,” Winstone observed.

The Opportunity to Collaborate

When the opportunity arose for Winstone to join the cast of ‘The Gentlemen’, he felt a personal obligation to address their history and discuss it directly with Ritchie.

“When it came through that he was interested in me doing [The Gentlemen[, I thought I owed him to go and see him and talk to him about it,” he said. The subsequent meeting and conversation served to fully mend their relationship.

“And we had a little cuddle. And it was all right. I’m glad that did happen, because you can’t go on [carrying a grudge]. When you’re kids, you do things, don’t you?” Winstone reflected, emphasizing the importance of letting go of past grievances.

‘The Gentlemen’ and Beyond

In ‘The Gentlemen’, Ray Winstone portrays Bobby, the on-screen father to Kaya Scodelario’s character. His involvement spans both seasons of the popular Netflix series, showcasing a successful professional reunion that was built on a foundation of resolved personal history. The collaboration highlights how professional respect and personal growth can overcome earlier conflicts, leading to fruitful creative partnerships.
