England and Northampton flanker Henry Pollock, a rising star in rugby union, has revealed his interest in pursuing a career in combat sports such as boxing or mixed martial arts (MMA). This ambition comes as Pollock finalizes terms on a new contract with his current club, Northampton Saints, and has signed with prominent boxing promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom agency.
A Dual Career Path for a Young Athlete
At just 21 years old, Pollock is on the cusp of signing a two-year contract extension with Northampton Saints, a move that would solidify his commitment to rugby. However, his recent association with Matchroom has opened up intriguing possibilities beyond the rugby pitch. Pollock expressed his enthusiasm for the combat sports world, stating, “I love my boxing and MMA. And now I’ve signed with Matchroom, it’s definitely opened new avenues into that.”
He emphasized his open-minded approach to future opportunities, noting, “It’s cool to experience new sports and it’s cool to experience different scenarios. I’m open to everything and I’m never going to say no to an opportunity.” Despite these broader aspirations, Pollock was quick to reaffirm his immediate focus: “at the minute rugby is my main priority, so I’m focusing on that in the near future. But, as I said, you never know what’s happening around the corner.”
Contract Negotiations and Future Prospects
While promoter Eddie Hearn has publicly suggested Pollock could command an annual salary of £1 million, reports indicate his new Saints deal is expected to be worth around £450,000. This financial aspect underscores the significant potential Pollock holds in the rugby world. Nevertheless, the prospect of a career transition, whether within sports or to an entirely different discipline, remains a distinct possibility for the talented back-row forward.
Pollock articulated a desire for diverse life experiences, stating, “I want to go and live in different countries, explore new sports, new avenues.” He conveyed a deep appreciation for his time at Northampton, acknowledging the club’s role in his development: “Northampton’s been great to me. I’ve been here my whole career and they have made me who I am.” The prospect of remaining with the Saints holds significant personal value for him, though he recognizes the complexities involved in contract negotiations: “For me to stay here would be so special. I know it’s not as easy as that and there’s lots of moving parts that come into play.”
Navigating Opportunities with Expert Guidance
Pollock highlighted the importance of his support team in managing these multifaceted career considerations. “That’s why I have an amazing team around me that can work all the little things out for me. I’m very open to new opportunities and I’m very open to exploring that.” His current contract is set to expire at the end of the year, after which he plans to thoroughly evaluate all available options.
“I’m under contract until the end of the year and then after that we’ll see what happens. I’m going to have to assess all options. I’ve talked to my management about everything I can do,” Pollock explained. He reiterated that his primary focus for the current year is on his performance with Northampton, with future decisions to be made in due course: “This year I’m very much focused on Northampton. After that, I guess that will be decided soon.”
Addressing Performance Pressure
Regarding Hearn’s high valuation, Pollock stated that it does not translate into undue pressure on his rugby performances. He views such comments as a testament to Hearn’s promotional expertise rather than personal expectation. “I don’t see it as pressure. I see it as him doing his job. He’s the best sports promoter in the world,” Pollock remarked. He added, “Eddie has been great for me, he has given me so many avenues to get into.”
The dual signing with Matchroom and the ongoing contract talks with Northampton Saints position Henry Pollock at an exciting crossroads in his athletic career. While his immediate future appears firmly rooted in rugby, his openness to exploring combat sports suggests a dynamic and potentially unconventional path ahead, guided by experienced professionals in both fields.
