Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey announces his immediate retirement from professional football, ending a stellar career marked by key contributions to his nation’s Euro 2016 semi-final run and inclusion in UEFA’s tournament team.

Ramsey, 35, scored crucial goals in two FA Cup finals during his over-a-decade stint at Arsenal. He has been clubless since leaving Mexican outfit Pumas in December after limited appearances since September. Persistent injuries and lack of first-team action kept him out of Wales duty since September 2024.

Recent hopes of featuring in the World Cup faded following Wales’ defeat to Bosnia, prompting Ramsey—who began at Cardiff City—to hang up his boots.

Ramsey’s Heartfelt Statement

“This has not been an easy decision to make,” Ramsey states. “After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.”

He continues: “Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.”

Early Days and Club Career

Ramsey rose through Cardiff City’s academy, debuting as their youngest-ever player in 2007 at age 16. He helped them reach the 2008 FA Cup final before joining Arsenal, where he spent most of his career.

Later moves included Juventus, Rangers, Nice, a return to Cardiff, and finally Pumas.

International Achievements

Ramsey earned 86 caps for Wales since his 2008 debut, competing in two European Championships and a World Cup. He also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
