A fast-moving wildfire is rapidly approaching the ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, presenting a unique and unprecedented challenge to the nation’s most secure federal facility. While built to withstand extreme internal threats like riots and escape attempts, the prison is now facing an external danger that bypasses its formidable defenses: a massive wildfire fueled by drought and high winds.

The Aspen Acres Fire, which ignited on June 29, has already scorched over 96,000 acres and destroyed at least 279 homes. As of late Thursday morning, it was only 15% contained. Driven by wind gusts reaching up to 100 miles per hour, the blaze is spreading north and northwest, directly toward Florence, a town that hosts a cluster of federal and state correctional facilities known as the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) and has earned the moniker ‘Prison Valley’.

A Fortress Under Siege

The ADX Supermax, often referred to as the ‘Alcatraz of the Rockies,’ is designed to house the country’s most dangerous and notorious criminals, including figures like Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as ‘El Chapo,’ Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Al-Qaeda terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui, and shoe bomber Richard Reid. These inmates are held under extreme lockdown conditions, with most spending 23 hours a day in solitary confinement.

Fire crews are working tirelessly to establish firebreaks and contain the Aspen Acres Fire, which has crept within approximately six miles of the ADX facility. The Bureau of Prisons has placed the complex on high alert, instructing inmates to ‘shelter in place.’ However, for individuals who have spent decades within the prison’s walls and rarely, if ever, leave their cells, the directive carries a stark implication.

Smoke: The Invisible Threat

An evacuation of the ADX Supermax would be an undertaking without precedent in its history. Sources familiar with the facility suggest that such a move is highly unlikely, given the extreme security measures and the nature of the inmates housed there. Jack Powers, a former inmate who spent 14 years in solitary confinement at ADX, expressed skepticism about any planned evacuation.

“Hell would have to freeze over before they’d let people out of that hellhole,” Powers told the Daily Mail. “Everybody knows there’s no evacuations from there. The only evacuations most people get from that place is on a stretcher.”

The logistical complexities of moving hundreds of the nation’s most dangerous individuals are immense. El Chapo’s lawyer, David Lane, described a potential evacuation as “virtually impossible, even nightmarish.” It would necessitate hundreds of armed corrections officers, secure transport, and the temporary housing of inmates in solitary confinement cells across various state and local correctional facilities, a task that strains existing resources.

The ‘Prison Valley’ Context

The ADX is situated within Fremont County, Colorado, an area with a high concentration of correctional facilities, earning it the nickname ‘Prison Valley.’ The Aspen Acres Fire has already prompted evacuations for over 11,000 residents in four counties as it advances. The proximity of the blaze to multiple correctional institutions, including the ADX, underscores the widespread impact of the wildfire.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on specific contingency plans, instead referring to a public statement. The release indicated that federal officials are “actively monitoring” the situation and that the complex remains safe. It emphasized a “shelter in place” posture as a precautionary measure, prioritizing safety while maintaining readiness to act if conditions change.
