As travelers return from Easter weekend, a wintry storm threatens to disrupt journeys across Alberta with heavy snow and icy conditions.
Heavy Snowfall in Northern Alberta
Meteorologists predict significant snowfall sweeping from west to east, starting near Peace River on Monday morning and reaching Cold Lake by evening. The heaviest accumulations, around 15 centimeters, will occur tonight or Tuesday morning. Near the B.C. border, up to 20 centimeters of snow is anticipated.
Intense Flurries Along the Rockies
Further south, communities from Jasper to Banff face bands of heavy flurries overnight Monday into Tuesday morning. These will reduce visibility and cause rapid snow buildup, especially on higher terrain. Local amounts of 5 to 10 centimeters are expected.
Travel Challenges and Safety Warnings
Highway 93 near Saskatchewan River Crossing, from Banff and Lake Louise, will see poor road conditions. Drivers should prepare for sudden changes, turn on lights, slow down, and keep a safe following distance. The snow should ease by Tuesday evening.
