The Northern Territory grieves the loss of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, with residents in Alice Springs honoring her memory by wearing pink, her favorite color, during community events.

Search and Discovery

Kumanjayi Little Baby vanished from the Old Timers/Ilyperenye town camp in Central Australia last weekend. Searchers located her body approximately 5 kilometers south of the camp on Thursday, thanks to a massive effort involving hundreds of volunteers, Aboriginal organizations, businesses, police, and emergency services.

Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill described the terrain as challenging, with teams advancing shoulder-to-shoulder. The community now channels that unity forward amid collective mourning.

Community Support and Vigils

The town remains somber as locals process this devastating loss. Mayor Hill highlighted a strong sense of shared grief and respect for the family in sorry business, alongside determination to rally support.

Residents have donated for the funeral and set up food drops at the town camp. A vigil occurs today, embracing the family and community. The annual Bangtail Muster parade through Alice Springs’ main street features pink ribbons at the family’s request, proceeding as a family-friendly event.

“They have asked that we wear pink ribbons in honor of Kumanjayi Little Baby because that was her favorite color, so we’ll all be doing that,” Mayor Hill stated. She praised the family’s generosity amid their pain.

In Darwin, around 30 people joined a saltwater ceremony at Lee Point beach, led by Larrakia traditional owner Richard Fejo. He called it a healing act fulfilling custodians’ duty of care.

Unrest and Legal Proceedings

Riots erupted Friday after authorities arrested 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis in connection with the death. Lewis faces murder charges and two others, undisclosed for legal reasons, and remains in Darwin custody. He appears in Alice Springs court via video link Tuesday.

Mayor Hill labeled the unrest and looting allegations as complex, acknowledging community horror over the tragedy. “This should never happen to a child and no family or community should be put in a position of processing this,” she said.

She stressed safety for frontline workers and businesses, with charges handled through the justice system. The priority stays on supporting the distressed town. Hill commended calls for calm from the family and leaders.
