Alisson Sidelined for Key Games as Salah Returns for Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson faces an extended absence, impacting crucial matches including the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City and the Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain. Manager Arne Slot delivered a mixed fitness update, highlighting challenges but also positive developments ahead of these high-stakes clashes.

Alisson’s Prolonged Absence

The Brazilian No. 1 misses the recent Brighton defeat and Brazil’s international camp due to a hamstring-related issue. He remains sidelined for both legs against PSG, the defending European champions who eliminated Liverpool last season. Slot confirms Alisson’s time out extends further, though he anticipates a return toward the season’s end.

Alisson, who recently extended his contract through next season, boasts a history of 11 injuries or illnesses over the past three seasons, many hamstring problems. Giorgi Mamardashvili, signed from Valencia two years ago, steps in as deputy. Slot typically reserves his third-choice keeper for early domestic cup rounds, but Freddie Woodman is unlikely to start over Mamardashvili at the Etihad Stadium.

Slot stated: ‘(Alisson) will not be part of the Paris Saint-Germain games as well. He will be out for a bit longer. Towards the end of the season we expect him to be fit.’

Salah’s Timely Return

Mohamed Salah rejoins the squad after sitting out the Brighton loss and Egypt’s international camp. His comeback launches a farewell tour following his announcement to depart Anfield at season’s end.

Progress for Isak and Frimpong

Alexander Isak completes two training sessions before the Manchester City trip and may feature briefly from the bench. This marks his first action since a fractured tibia against Tottenham Hotspur on December 20, following 3.5 months sidelined—exactly 101 days as of his return to group training.

Slot added: ‘It will definitely be too fast to expect him in the starting line-up, he trained with us yesterday for the first time after exactly 101 days out. It will take a bit of time to give him a lot of minutes but we will make sure we do the right thing in terms of building him up. It is a very good thing to have him on the training ground again. It will be even better to have him available for games.’

Jeremie Frimpong resumes training after a Netherlands international issue but requires cautious management given multiple injuries this season.
