Amanda Holden opens up about the profound grief of losing her stillborn son Theo nearly 15 years ago. The Britain’s Got Talent judge shares her enduring perspective during a candid conversation with close friend Alan Carr on their BBC series Amanda & Alan’s Greek Job. Holden, who has two daughters with husband Chris Hughes, maintains that she views herself as a mother of three, emphasizing Theo’s lasting place in her family.
Processing the Devastating Loss
In the Friday night episode, the 54-year-old star discusses how she came to terms with the tragedy that occurred in February 2011. Theo was stillborn after 24 completed weeks of pregnancy, as defined by NHS guidelines. Holden explains her acceptance without resentment or blame.
“When we lost Theo, there wasn’t one moment where I thought ‘why has this happened to me?’ But there also wasn’t a moment where I sort of blamed God or anything,” she states. “The way I accepted it was to say that he chose me, just for those few months to see what it was like to live and develop and be in the universe, and then the universe took him back. Now I don’t think that’s religious, but I let him go back, and that was my belief rather than like he went back to heaven as such.”
Holden conveys a sense of connection, noting that her son exists “out there” in the universe and remains “still part of our family.” This outlook, she tells Carr, represents “the only way [she] could make sense” of the loss. “I was so lucky to have him for all that time. And even though he was born sleeping, he was perfect. I always say I’m a mother of three. Because I am.”
Honoring Theo’s Memory
Holden has publicly commemorated anniversaries of Theo’s would-be birthdays, including a poignant 2024 tribute on what would have been his 13th. She shared an Instagram post with a lit candle, writing, “You would have become a teenager today…”
Her experiences have inspired advocacy efforts. In 2020, she released the emotional single With You, and in 2018, she established Theo’s Hope fund to support mothers facing stillbirths. The initiative aims to fund bereavement counselors at medical centers. “We want to raise money for a bereavement counsellor at the centre. I had so many people to talk to, talking to somebody is absolutely paramount,” Holden explained during the fund’s launch.
A Resilient Family Bond
Holden and Hughes, married since 2008, have navigated deep challenges together, including her critical illness after the birth of their second daughter, Hollie. The couple shares daughters Lexi, 20, and Hollie Rose, 14. Holden praises their daughters’ strong work ethic, particularly Lexi’s diligence and desire to contribute meaningfully.
Reflecting on her marriage, Holden highlights the couple’s ability to find humor in tough times. “We can make jokes out of any situation, throughout the best and darkest times of our lives,” she notes. She describes Hughes as reliable in practical ways, helping her balance her strong personality while supporting their family.
