Andrew Hastie Navigates Ben Roberts-Smith Case Fallout

Published on

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie is attempting to distance himself from the legal proceedings involving former SAS soldier Ben Roberts-Smith, who faces serious charges. Despite Hastie’s efforts, the association with the high-profile case continues to cast a shadow over his reputation, particularly within veteran communities, and poses potential risks to his political career and personal safety. Roberts-Smith himself faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Hastie’s Role in the Roberts-Smith Defamation Case

In a recent interview on Sky News, Hastie addressed critics who link him to the downfall of Ben Roberts-Smith. He sought to clarify his limited involvement in the seven-year defamation battle between Roberts-Smith and Nine Entertainment Co, which preceded the current war crimes charges. Hastie stated that his evidence in the defamation case was minimal and not central to the proceedings. He noted that, unlike other individuals whose identities were protected, his public role made him a focal point for public attention.

Hastie, who served as an SAS officer for over five years, provided corroborative testimony related to two murder allegations and a bullying charge against Roberts-Smith. The judge in the defamation case described Hastie’s testimony as “honest and straightforward.” His evidence occupied a small portion of the extensive court judgment, highlighting its non-central nature to the defamation findings.

‘Cosmic Justice’ and Witness Connections

However, the narrative surrounding Hastie’s involvement extends beyond his formal evidence. During the defamation trial, Hastie maintained contact with journalists investigating the story for Nine. He also developed a rapport with key witnesses who testified against Roberts-Smith. Among these was a sergeant, operating under the pseudonym Kenneth Barber, who had previously questioned Roberts-Smith’s entitlement to the Victoria Cross.

Hastie and Sgt Barber appeared together on a 2019 television program that detailed accusations against Roberts-Smith, including an alleged incident of kicking a prisoner off a cliff during the Afghanistan war. In court, Hastie recounted extensive discussions with Sgt Barber at SAS headquarters in Perth, covering philosophical themes such as good versus evil and the concept of “cosmic justice.” Hastie reportedly assured Barber that “time will take care of himself.” Ben Roberts-Smith has denied all charges and intends to plead not guilty; he is currently on bail and resides in southeast Queensland.

Political Alignments and Contrasts

Andrew Hastie’s entanglement in what has been termed the “murder trial of the decade” has garnered both support and criticism. Notably, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly commended Hastie for his stance against the One Nation party. This endorsement came after Hastie reportedly declared he would “die rather than bend the knee to One Nation” in discussions with fellow Coalition MPs.

Albanese’s public support for Hastie has been interpreted by some as a strategic move, potentially aimed at influencing the Liberal leadership dynamics. This contrasts with the Liberal leader’s more reserved approach to critiquing One Nation, likely to avoid alienating potential voters.

Shared Priorities with One Nation

An interesting parallel exists between Hastie’s policy priorities and those of One Nation, despite their political opposition. Both Hastie and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson have identified immigration restriction as a primary concern. Furthermore, Hastie’s opposition to the net-zero emissions policy was a factor in the Coalition’s decision to abandon it, aligning with One Nation’s stated position that “Net zero is destroying Australia.”

Hastie also advocates for “reindustrialisation” and has expressed skepticism about the current “rules-based global order.” Similarly, One Nation argues that international institutions can undermine Australian sovereignty and promotes domestic manufacturing. While Hastie has set aside his previous ambition to revive car manufacturing, his broader economic and international outlook shares common ground with One Nation’s platform.

Concerns of Foreign Interference and Political Future

Amidst these political discussions, Hastie has raised concerns about potential foreign interference and covert operations aimed at undermining him. He has pointed to reports of foreign contractors managing One Nation’s social media pages and a recent warning from the Director-General of ASIO regarding foreign governments employing “psychological operations online to divide countries.” Hastie suggested that “nefarious activities” are occurring in the background, possibly funded by undisclosed sources.

Given his background in military intelligence, Hastie possesses insight into such matters. However, assessing the credibility of these claims is challenging without further information. Meanwhile, speculation about Hastie’s political future has surfaced, with some commentators suggesting his involvement in the Roberts-Smith case has significantly impacted his standing within the Liberal Party and could lead him to reconsider his affiliation.

Election Prospects and Public Perception

Despite these internal party pressures and public scrutiny, Hastie has affirmed his intention to contest the next election as a Liberal candidate for his seat of Canning. His electoral success may hinge on how Roberts-Smith’s supporters perceive his role in the legal proceedings against the former soldier, especially as election day approaches.

The ongoing association with the Ben Roberts-Smith case presents a complex challenge for Andrew Hastie, intertwining his military past, political present, and future electoral prospects. Navigating these challenges while maintaining public trust and political viability remains a significant undertaking.
