Angelo Muscat: Tragic Life and Death of The Prisoner Star at 47

Published on

Renowned actor Angelo Muscat, celebrated for his unforgettable role in the cult classic The Prisoner, passed away in isolation and near poverty despite a career that spanned iconic television and film projects. Standing at just 4 feet 3 inches tall, Muscat brought a unique presence to roles in sci-fi series and family favorites, yet faced personal hardships that defined his later years.

Early Life and Breakthrough Roles

Born in Malta, Muscat grew up in a family where his parents and three brothers all exceeded 6 feet in height, making his stature a stark contrast. Before pursuing acting, he worked in a zip-fastener factory and as a kitchen porter. Upon relocating to the UK, opportunities arose in the entertainment industry. He first gained notice in the Doctor Who spin-off Galaxy 4, portraying a Chumbley robot. His film credits included the role of an Oompa-Loompa in the 1971 adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, showcasing his versatility despite physical challenges.

Iconic Performance in The Prisoner

Muscat’s most enduring role came as the silent butler in the 1967 ITV series The Prisoner, which depicts a British intelligence agent captured and confined in a mysterious village. Throughout the series, his character never spoke a word, yet his presence became integral to the narrative. During filming, Muscat shared his deep appreciation for the opportunity. He stated, “I always feel lonely. I feel that people don’t want to know me. Girls don’t fancy me. I’m tiny and I’m nearly bald, but I’m only in my 30s. That’s why I’m so grateful to Patrick McGoohan. He has given me responsibility for the first time in my life. I’m playing an important part in a big series. I am something – for the first time ever. I could hardly believe it when he chose me. I have always been a fan of his and never missed a Danger Man episode. When he chose me, I went so red in the face I thought I was going to catch fire.”

Later Struggles and Untimely Death

Following the loss of his parents, Muscat endured a solitary existence in a basement flat in North London. Acting gigs dwindled, compounded by his height, which often pitted him against child actors for roles—a situation he found undignified. To make ends meet, he crafted and sold handmade birdcages. His colleague George Markstein reflected on Muscat’s impact, saying, “I was extremely sad to hear that he had died. He never said a word throughout the series, and yet in a way he was as important, or perhaps even more so, than No.6 himself. Angelo was a genial little man – he always had a smile, even on the set at 8 o’clock in the morning he had a marvellous knack of being cheerful. I think one of the nicest things about the whole series was the fact that it gave Angelo a niche and a certain amount of worldwide fame.” Muscat succumbed to pneumonia at age 47 in 1977 while receiving treatment at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of quiet resilience in entertainment.
