Anfield Tension Escalates in Premier League Clash
Liverpool supporters erupted in anger during Saturday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United after Anthony Gordon delivered a controversial late challenge on goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The Reds entered the game at Anfield in sixth place, trailing Manchester United by two points in fourth, following a winless streak in the league stretching over a month.
Arne Slot’s team aimed for a strong start but faced early dominance from Newcastle. The visitors controlled the first 30 minutes, with winger Gordon repeatedly troubling Liverpool’s backline, including the former Everton player who made his mark aggressively.
The Controversial Challenge
Gordon pressed Alisson as the Brazilian distributed the ball to Virgil van Dijk, resulting in a heavy collision that forced the goalkeeper to the ground. Referees issued a yellow card to Gordon amid resounding boos from the Anfield crowd.
TNT Sports commentator Lucy Ward described the moment: “Anthony Gordon was a little bit late, and he just caught Alisson.” She added, “He is the pantomime villain in here.”
Social media buzzed with frustration from Liverpool fans. One supporter posted on X: “Gordon could easily have been sent off by now.” Another commented: “Wouldn’t be surprised if Gordon gets a red card tonight. Awful challenge on Alisson.”
Gordon’s Goal Ignites Further Outrage
The tension peaked when Gordon broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a precise low shot that beat Alisson and quieted the Kop end. Ward praised the effort: “That was a terrific finish from Anthony Gordon. It has shown what Newcastle are all about tonight at Anfield. Gordon didn’t allow Alisson to get set.”
Newcastle appeared poised to lead at halftime, but Liverpool mounted a swift response. Hugo Ekitike equalized shortly after, latching onto a pass from Florian Wirtz to restore parity.
Moments later, Ekitike struck again, capitalizing on a long ball from Milos Kerkez down the left flank. The French forward rifled a stunning finish with the outside of his right foot to give Liverpool the lead.
Ward reacted with excitement: “Wow. What an atmosphere in here. Hugo Ekitike, again. He has got some magic dust. A terrific finish.” She elaborated: “Liverpool have threatened. That was absolutely fabulous for the first goal. Initially from Florian Wirtz, who showed a little sparkle during this game. Hugo Ekitike was the one who started the move off. Soon as it arrived at Wirtz, he knows exactly where Hugo Ekitike is. Brilliant play from both of them.”
