Arthur Fery Reaches First ATP Final at Winston-Salem Open

Published on

British tennis player Arthur Fery has advanced to his first career ATP Tour final, securing a spot in the championship match of the Winston-Salem Open. This significant achievement marks a new career-high ranking for the 24-year-old, capping a remarkable summer on court.

Fery’s Path to the Final

Fery’s journey through the ATP 250 event in Winston-Salem has been marked by a series of strong performances. He secured straightforward victories against Cruz Hewitt and qualifier Mees Rottgering early in the tournament. The quarter-finals presented a tougher challenge, where Fery battled through a three-set match to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The semi-final match saw Fery face Australian James Duckworth. The British player was leading 6-4, 1-2 when Duckworth was forced to retire due to injury, propelling Fery into his maiden ATP final. This victory follows a previous encounter between the two players just two weeks prior in Cincinnati, where Fery also emerged victorious.

A Season of Breakthroughs

This breakthrough at the Winston-Salem Open follows a fairy-tale run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon earlier in the summer, further solidifying Fery’s emergence as a prominent figure in men’s tennis. Just eight weeks ago, Fery was ranked outside the top 100 players globally. His current form and recent successes are set to propel him to a new career-high ranking on Monday.

Championship Match Preview

Fery is scheduled to compete for the Winston-Salem Open title against Ignacio Buse of Peru on Saturday. Buse, currently ranked world No. 36, also reached his second ATP Tour final by defeating Benjamin Bonzi of France with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in his semi-final match.

Ignacio Buse, the highest remaining seed in the North Carolina tournament, has enjoyed a successful season himself. His career highlight came in May when he captured his first tour-level trophy at the ATP 500 event in Hamburg. A year ago, Buse was ranked outside the top 100 at No. 135, but he is now poised for a seeded position at the upcoming US Open. His first-round opponent at the US Open is set to be American Marcos Giron.

Looking Ahead: US Open and Beyond

Arthur Fery is also preparing for his main draw debut at the US Open, which commences on Sunday. His opening-round match at the Grand Slam event will be a challenging encounter against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, currently ranked world No. 14.

Tennis fans can follow the US Open action live, with coverage beginning on August 30. The Laver Cup, taking place at The O2 in London from September 25-27, will also be broadcast live, offering further opportunities to watch top-tier tennis.
