Former England international Ashley Cole has concluded his tenure as head coach of Italian second-tier club Cesena, departing just three months after taking on the role. Cole, who began his first managerial position with the Serie B side in March, announced his decision on social media, citing a shift in the club’s strategic direction following discussions with the sporting director.
Cole’s Brief Stint at Cesena
Cole’s time at Cesena saw him manage eight matches, securing one victory. The club ultimately finished 11th in the league, failing to secure a play-off spot. His appointment earlier this year had followed reports that he needed to meet specific performance criteria to be considered for a contract extension. The decision to appoint Cole had also faced some opposition from Cesena supporters who were unhappy with the dismissal of his predecessor, Michele Mignani.
Reasons for Departure
In a statement posted on Instagram, Cole expressed his gratitude to the players and staff for their dedication during his brief period with the club. He stated his pride in contributing his experience to a club with such passionate fans and his enjoyment in working with the squad to establish a new playing identity and prepare for the upcoming season. However, he elaborated on the circumstances leading to his departure:
‘Following recent discussions with the Sporting Director regarding a change in the club’s strategy, I have decided that it is best for me to move on,’ Cole wrote. ‘I leave with great respect for all the people there, as well as the fans, and look forward to my next challenge.’
Cole’s Coaching Career Path
Since retiring as a player in 2019, Ashley Cole has embarked on a coaching career, holding various positions. He most recently served as a full-time national coach with the Football Association. Prior to his role at Cesena, Cole gained experience as an assistant manager under Frank Lampard at both Everton and Chelsea. He also held an assistant coaching role at Birmingham City during Wayne Rooney’s management spell.
Cole’s coaching experience extends to the national level, where he worked with the England U21 team and assisted Lee Carsley with the senior England squad. His involvement with the national setup highlights a continued commitment to developing his coaching acumen.
A Storied Playing Career
As a player, Ashley Cole enjoyed a highly decorated career, making over 700 appearances before concluding his playing days with Derby County in 2019. He is widely recognized for his successful spells at two of England’s biggest clubs.
Success at Chelsea
During his time at Chelsea, Cole achieved significant silverware. His trophy cabinet includes:
- UEFA Champions League
- Premier League title
- Four FA Cups
- UEFA Europa League
- League Cup
- FA Community Shield
Arsenal Beginnings
Cole began his professional career at Arsenal, where he was a key figure in the team that won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two FA Community Shields. His transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea in 2006 was one of the most high-profile moves in English football at the time.
Experience in Italy and Beyond
Cole also had a spell playing in Italy’s top flight, Serie A, joining AS Roma in 2014 after leaving Chelsea. He spent two seasons in Rome before moving to Major League Soccer (MLS) side LA Galaxy. His final playing role was at Derby County, where he transitioned into coaching after hanging up his boots.
Looking Ahead
Cole’s departure from Cesena marks another step in his developing coaching career. While his first head coaching position in Italy was short-lived, his previous coaching roles with the FA, Everton, Chelsea, and Birmingham City, alongside his extensive playing experience, provide a strong foundation for future opportunities in football management.
