The classic snooker game show Big Break returns to screens after 24 years off air, with a fresh series set to captivate audiences once more.
Original Run and Peak Popularity
Big Break first aired for 10 series from 1991 to 2002, drawing primetime viewers on Saturday evenings. At its height, the show attracted nearly 14 million watchers. Comedian Jim Davidson served as host, while snooker expert John Virgo acted as referee and demonstrated trick shots.
New Hosts Take the Stage
Paddy McGuinness steps into the hosting role, following his time on Question of Sport before its 2023 cancellation. Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry joins as the snooker specialist, mirroring Virgo’s position.
Format and Fresh Updates
Contestants from the public tackle general knowledge questions as their assigned snooker professionals pot balls to secure cash prizes. Pros also guide participants through trick shots. The revival introduces a modern look, blending fast-paced snooker action with comedic flair. New camera angles offer unique shot perspectives, and the iconic theme tune makes a comeback.
Three contestants and their pros compete across three rounds of trick shots, building to an intense finale. A total of 20 half-hour episodes head to BBC Two and iPlayer, riding the wave of the recent Gladiators revival.
Hosts Share Excitement
Stephen Hendry, who featured in the 1991 premiere and competed 18 times across the original series, expressed enthusiasm: “Big Break was a unique mix of trick shots and great entertainment and I can’t wait to be back at the table and bringing this incredible show to a whole new audience and who knows, we might inspire the next generation of snooker players to get into the sport.”
The retired 57-year-old now runs the popular YouTube channel Stephen Hendry’s Cue Tips and provides punditry. Original episodes also showcased active stars like Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, Shaun Murphy, Mark Williams, Ali Carter, and Matthew Stevens.
Paddy McGuinness, known for Top Gear and Take Me Out, added: “I am absolutely delighted to be a part of Big Break. It is one of those shows everyone knows and loves so to be hosting it alongside legend Stephen Hendry will be something special. Bring it on!”
