Beetroot Lowers High Blood Pressure Naturally, Doctor Explains

High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects about one in three adults and forces the heart to pump harder, straining blood vessels and organs. Untreated, it raises risks of strokes and heart attacks. Diet plays a key role, with salty foods worsening the condition by causing water retention, but certain vegetables offer relief.

Beetroot’s Powerful Effects

Doctor Suraj Kukadia highlights beetroot as an outstanding source of dietary nitrates that reduce blood pressure both centrally and peripherally while boosting athletic performance.

“Beetroots are an excellent dietary nitrate, which has been proven to lower blood pressure both centrally and peripherally,” Dr. Kukadia states. “On top of this, it can also help improve athletic performance.”

For those who find beetroot’s earthy flavor strong, he suggests blending it with apple, ginger, or fruit juices.

Evidence from Key Studies

Research from Queen Mary University of London, published in the journal Hypertension in 2015, shows that 250ml of beetroot juice lowers blood pressure by an average of 8/4 mmHg, often returning levels to safe ranges for participants.

Experts note that every 2mmHg rise in blood pressure increases heart disease mortality by 7% and stroke risk by 10%. Beetroot’s nitrates drive these benefits.

Other nitrate-rich foods include spinach, rhubarb, celery, lettuce, and watercress.

Lead researcher Professor Amrita Ahluwalia states: “Diseases of the heart and blood vessels – which can cause heart attacks and strokes – remain the biggest cause of death worldwide. However, unlike some other serious illnesses, we are fortunate in that we can make certain lifestyle changes which dramatically improve our heart and blood vessel health. This research has proven that a daily inorganic nitrate dose can be as effective as medical intervention in reducing blood pressure and the best part is we can get it from beetroot and other leafy green vegetables.”

A 2022 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Nutrition, reviewing seven studies, confirms beetroot juice reduces systolic blood pressure in hypertension patients, with optimal results after 60 days of daily intake. It shows no significant effect on diastolic pressure.

Additional Steps to Manage Blood Pressure

The NHS advises:

  • Follow a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercise regularly, targeting at least 150 minutes weekly
  • Lose weight if overweight
  • Limit salt intake and avoid adding salt to meals
  • Restrict alcohol to no more than 14 units weekly
  • Cut back on caffeine from coffee, tea, and cola
  • Quit smoking

Consult a GP if concerned about blood pressure.
