Eco-Conscious Stadium Development Sparks Debate
Union Saint-Gilloise’s proposed 16,000-seat stadium will incorporate artificial nesting boxes and hedgehog shelters under a groundbreaking environmental agreement. The Belgian Pro League champions aim to construct their new venue in Parc de Bempt, a municipal green space located 2.8 kilometers from their current home ground.
Current Venue Limitations
The club currently plays at historic Stade Joseph Marien, a 9,400-capacity listed building unable to accommodate expansion. During their recent Champions League campaign, the team temporarily relocated to Anderlecht’s Lotto Park and Belgium’s national stadium due to insufficient facilities.
Controversial Location Selection
The €70-85 million project in Forest, Brussels has faced opposition from environmental groups concerned about losing green space. However, regional authorities granted an exemption last summer, citing “major public interest” and potential contributions to social cohesion.
Environmental Mitigation Requirements
Under strict conditions, the club must:
- Plant 269 replacement trees for the 237 being removed
- Complete tree felling before February 28 to avoid bird nesting season
- Install nesting boxes for black swifts, housemartins, and sparrows
- Construct hedgehog shelters using wood from felled trees
Project Status and Challenges
Final approvals remain pending for both urban planning and environmental compliance. Ongoing negotiations with Forest municipality concern the land sale for the proposed site. Architects involved in Premier League stadium projects are reportedly designing the venue, though construction timelines remain uncertain pending all necessary approvals.
