Boxer Challenges Prince William to Sparring Session

Published on

A Commonwealth Games boxing champion has extended a lighthearted invitation to Prince William for a sparring session, following the heir to the throne’s attendance at the netball. Isaac Okoh, who secured a gold medal in the heavyweight division, made the playful offer after his victory.

Commonwealth Games Boxing Success for England

The boxing arena buzzed with excitement as England’s athletes delivered a strong performance during the Commonwealth Games. In a dominant display, Sacha Hickey, Patris Mughalzai, and Isaac Okoh each clinched gold medals within a short span of the day’s opening session. These victories underscore the talent emerging from training camps, with the trio notably honing their skills together in Sheffield.

Okoh’s triumph came in the heavyweight final, where he faced and defeated Welsh opponent Connor Williams. The win marked a significant achievement for the young boxer, who is now setting his sights on future international competitions.

A Cheeky Invitation to Royalty

Following his gold medal win, Isaac Okoh humorously addressed the possibility of the Prince of Wales joining him for a training session. “If he wants a pad session, tell him to call me. But the fee is quite high!” Okoh remarked, adding a touch of playful bravado to his comments. He expressed hope that the royal family might attend future boxing events, noting the electric atmosphere at the Games.

“I don’t know what they’re into. They might come down and enjoy the fights,” Okoh mused. “The atmosphere has been great this week so hopefully one day they might see me box.”

While the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children, were observed enjoying a netball match in Glasgow during the morning, the boxing ring provided its own form of high-stakes competition. The contrast highlighted the diverse range of sporting events capturing attention at the Games.

Future Ambitions: From Commonwealth to Olympics and Beyond

The success at the Commonwealth Games is viewed by Okoh and his teammates as a crucial stepping stone towards their ultimate aspirations. Many of these emerging athletes are now focusing their ambitions on achieving Olympic gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, following in the footsteps of celebrated British boxers like Nicola Adams, Anthony Joshua, and Amir Khan.

“You’re going to see us back at the top of the podium again,” Okoh confidently stated, reflecting on his current form. “I feel like I’m one of the best in the world at 90kgs at the minute. I’m still young.”

He elaborated on his recent performance trajectory, noting a significant upswing in his career since September of the previous year. “Since September last year I’ve been on an amazing run of form, picking up loads of medals. Come LA, I’ll be looking to win another gold medal.”

The Road to Professional Boxing

Okoh views his amateur career and international successes as essential preparation for the professional boxing circuit. The path involves building a strong foundation through major tournaments like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, aiming to eventually compete on the lucrative pay-per-view stage.

“It’s all building blocks towards the big pay-per-view nights that we all dream of,” Okoh explained. “This is how we get there, winning medals like this at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. Hopefully one day you’ll see us on posters, buying our pay per views.”

This mindset reflects a strategic approach to career development, where each medal and each competition serves as a vital component in the journey toward becoming a recognized and successful professional athlete. The dedication and ambition shown by Okoh and his peers signal a promising future for British boxing on the global stage.
