Nigel Bearman, director of cleaning company Daily Poppins, explains that dull whites stem from protein buildup due to sweat and body oils.

“Aspirin contains salicylic acid, a natural solvent for protein-based stains,” Bearman states. “Dissolved in a soak, the acid neutralizes yellowing and breaks the bond between fabric and grime. Professional launderers use this method for a crisp finish without harsh bleaches that weaken fibers.”

Step-by-Step Guide to Brighter Whites

For optimal results, soak stained clothing in an aspirin solution before washing:

• Crush five 325mg aspirin tablets and dissolve in a gallon of hot water. Add clothes and soak.
• For stubborn armpit stains, create a paste: Crush two tablets with minimal water, rub onto yellow areas, and let sit for 30 minutes before the main soak.
• Soak for at least eight hours to allow salicylic acid to penetrate fibers.
• Run through a normal wash cycle. Add two more crushed aspirin tablets to the drum for extra brightness.

A standard aspirin pack costs around 69p, making each full-load treatment under 15p—far cheaper than premium whitening powders at £10 or more.
