Bristol Airport AI Billboard Sparks Sexism Backlash

Published on

A provocative billboard at Bristol Airport highlights Narwhal Labs’ upcoming AI employee, depicting a smiling female chatbot with the tagline: ‘She outworks everyone. And she’ll never ask for a pay rise.’ Installed on April 10, the ad has ignited widespread criticism online for its portrayal of the AI as endlessly compliant.

Campaign Details and Features

Narwhal Labs promotes this AI as part of its ‘Autonomous AI Communications’ project, which deploys agents across voice, SMS, email, and WhatsApp channels. Set for a May launch, the initiative recently attracted £20 million in funding. Additional ads emphasize the AI’s reliability: always available, never ill, no HR involvement, operating 24/7 at no initial cost.

A male AI counterpart appears in promotions focused on efficiency: ‘He’ll find them, call them, and follow up. While you sleep.’

Online Backlash

The campaign quickly went viral on LinkedIn, where users labeled it ‘obscene’ and ‘truly horrible.’ Business development specialist Caroline Pooley commented: ‘Framing an AI tool as a woman who never rests, never asks for more, and simply works harder than everyone else isn’t clever, it’s echoing an expectation placed on many women to over-perform with less recognition, boundaries, and unfair compensation.’

Chief people officer Natalie S added: ‘Calling it progress while portraying the “perfect worker” as a silent, compliant woman feels less like innovation and more like regression in disguise.’

Expert Analysis on Gender Bias

Dr. Ruhi Khan, research officer in the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, describes the ads as a ‘masterclass in encoded sexism.’ She states: ‘It’s not a coincidence – it is ideology.’

Khan’s recent study tested ChatGPT with identical performance reviews for employees named John and Jane. Results showed AI rated John as exceeding expectations and suitable for leadership, while Jane merely met expectations and required guidance—the only difference being the names.

She further notes: ‘When a tech company takes out a billboard in a major UK airport selling a female AI employee on the grounds that she will never demand fair pay, we have moved beyond unconscious bias in a dataset. This is the deliberate commercialisation of patriarchy. And this is deeply troubling.’

Gender Pay Context

The ad’s pay rise reference coincides with persistent disparities. A YouGov survey of British adults reveals 46% of men have requested raises, compared to 33% of women. Office for National Statistics data indicates a 10.9% gender pay gap. In 2025, Equal Pay Day occurred on November 22, marking the point from which women effectively work unpaid.

Gender sociologist Stephen Whitehead, specializing in masculinity and gender relations, observes that the portrayal aligns with certain online narratives seeking compliant femininity. He explains: ‘AI now offers a technological pathway to simulate exactly that. Female AI workers/companions can be available 24/7 to satisfy every male need and fantasy.’
