A 21-year-old British man lies in a coma in Thailand following a severe scooter collision during his holiday. Zak Forsyth sustained critical injuries when his scooter struck a car while he rode sober. The car’s driver promptly transported him to a hospital.
Details of the Incident
Forsyth had been vacationing with friends for a week when the accident occurred. His girlfriend, Amy Ekin, 21, from Huyton, Merseyside, learned of the crash through police who identified him via documents checked by the British embassy. Even his friends remained unaware initially.
Ekin stated: “He was coming back from somewhere. His friends didn’t even know about it.”
Serious Injuries and Treatment Challenges
Forsyth suffers from a brain bleed, broken nose, broken jaw, broken ankle, and broken arm. Without medical or travel insurance, his family covers all costs. They have secured surgery with a £5,000 deposit, but ongoing care demands more funds.
Ekin, fighting tears, shared: “He’s in a coma.” She plans to fly to Thailand on Monday using an emergency passport to be by his side.
Fundraiser Gains Momentum
A JustGiving campaign has raised over £9,000 toward a £20,000 goal to cover medical bills and repatriation to Merseyside. The family aims to bring Forsyth home soon.
Ekin noted the community’s support: “He’s loved by everyone around here. I’ve had people coming round, dropping money off every five minutes. What we have is great but it’s not enough to fix everything.”
His mother, Mel McCourt, 47, also from Huyton, emphasized: “We need as much help as we can to get him home.”
Time-Sensitive Appeal
In a public statement, Ekin added: “This has been sudden and devastating… Time is critical, and every moment matters in ensuring he continues to receive the care he desperately needs.
“It is incredibly humbling… to have to ask others for financial help… Any donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference.” All proceeds support Forsyth’s treatment and family travel.
