Britney Spears received immediate support from her mother, Lynne Spears, and sons Sean Preston and Jayden James following her DUI arrest on Wednesday night.
Family Support Emerges Quickly
Lynne Spears called her daughter shortly after learning of the incident, once Britney had been released from custody. The 44-year-old singer also spoke with her 20-year-old son Sean and 19-year-old son Jayden after returning home. Family members emphasize Lynne’s unwavering love for Britney and note ongoing prayers for her well-being.
The conversation between mother and daughter proved positive and hopeful, despite past tensions. Lynne offered full support and assistance with any needs. Plans are now in place for Lynne to visit Britney soon, building on their reunion in May 2023. The pair communicate regularly by phone, though in-person meetings have been limited.
Britney recently reunited with Jayden over Christmas, sharing joyful Instagram posts about the visit. Sean remained in Louisiana due to work but celebrated the holiday with relatives, including his aunt Jamie Lynn Spears and grandmother Lynne.
Arrest Details from Authorities
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to a report of a black BMW 430i driving erratically at high speeds on southbound US-101 near Newbury Park around 8:48 p.m. PT. They located the vehicle, initiated a stop, and confirmed Britney was alone inside.
Officers observed signs of impairment and administered field sobriety tests. Britney was arrested for violating California Vehicle Code section 23152(g), driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. She was booked into Ventura County Main Jail around 3 a.m. Thursday and released by 6 a.m.
Audio from the 911 dispatch describes a black sedan with erratic braking, swerving, and no tail light. The pursuit, starting around 8:13 p.m., lasted about an hour until officers pulled her over near 9:30 p.m. A drug recognition expert was requested at the scene. Chemical tests remain pending, and the investigation continues.
Photos show the impound lot where Britney’s vehicle was towed; it was later picked up by someone else.
Representative’s Statement
A representative for Britney stated: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in the long-overdue changes that need to occur in her life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her, and her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue plan to set her up for success and well-being.”
Relationship History and Past Challenges
Britney shares Sean and Jayden with ex-husband Kevin Federline, married from 2004 to 2007. Initial joint custody shifted to Federline gaining sole physical custody amid Britney’s struggles. The sons moved to Hawaii with their father in 2023 after a period of estrangement starting in 2022.
Reconciliations have progressed: Britney reconnected with Jayden in 2024, and sources indicate she is slowly rebuilding with Sean. Federline noted in November 2025 that his sons love their mother and seek to mend ties, despite past disturbances at her home.
The family dynamic has been complicated, particularly after Britney’s 13-year conservatorship ended in 2021. She has expressed fears about her family, claiming they isolated her and refused responsibility. Recent posts highlight ongoing health issues, including injuries limiting her dancing.
Prior Incidents
Britney faced recent scrutiny for phone use while driving in February and prior swerving on a highway. Historical issues include a 2007 hit-and-run citation (dismissed after payment), a 2008 license violation (dismissed), and a 2023 welfare check involving knives (no charges). Her 2007 breakdown led to the conservatorship amid public concerns.
A court hearing is scheduled for May 4.
