Footy Legend Bryan Cousins Reveals Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis
Bryan Cousins, a celebrated figure in Australian football, has publicly disclosed his diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND), a year after receiving the life-altering news. In an emotional interview, the 72-year-old shared the first signs of the incurable condition, which emerged during a beach run.
“I was running along the beach and started to struggle. A bloke stopped me and asked if I was OK,” Cousins recounted. “I went to a neurologist and I started looking at what I might have, and I got the one disease I didn’t want to get, which was MND, which I got diagnosed [with] 12 months ago.”
The revelation was particularly difficult for Cousins, who expressed his concern about informing his children. “I got teary mainly because I thought, ‘How am I going to tell the kids?’ I texted them on a Saturday and asked them to come around home on Sunday, and we had a big cuddle and we discussed MND.”
A Sporting Icon’s Battle
Cousins, a standout player for the Perth Football Club and Geelong in the VFL, has found a measure of humor amidst the challenging circumstances. “One of my granddaughters came out and she was really good. She said, ‘Pop, when you get in the wheelchair, can I go for a ride?'” he shared, managing a smile through his tears.
His career saw him play 240 games for Perth starting in 1970, followed by a successful stint with Geelong from 1975 to 1979, before returning to Perth to conclude his playing days in 1987.
Inspiration from Neale Daniher and a Community’s Fight
Cousins’ diagnosis comes shortly after the passing of AFL icon Neale Daniher, who bravely battled MND for years and dedicated his life to raising awareness and funds for a cure. Daniher’s courage has served as a profound inspiration for Cousins and his family.
“The way he approached it and his courage and his attitude, one word kept coming to my mind: he’s a fighter and continued to fight until the day he died,” Cousins said of Daniher. “I’m getting along, I’m still independent, but I’m looking at everything that Neale said and every six months is worse than the previous [six months] and you notice the little things in life.”
Cousins expressed his belief in finding a cure, motivated by Daniher’s immense efforts. “Because of all the amazing things that people are doing, I do believe we will find a cure. Neale was the one person you thought who was going to beat it, and with the amount of money he’s raised – I think it’s something like $140 million – I want to follow his lead.” He added, “He was never a burden to anyone… I saw him as the commander-in-chief of the MND movement and if we ever find a cure, it’s because of him.”
Family Support and Broader Impact
Ben Cousins, Bryan’s son and a Brownlow Medal winner, was present during his father’s announcement. “That’s where I learned to love the game, watching Dad,” Ben stated. “He was my hero growing up and in many ways he still is.”
The news also follows recent reports of NRL star Jai Arrow’s diagnosis with MND at the age of 30, highlighting the disease’s impact across different sporting codes. Arrow has reportedly sought treatment options abroad.
Understanding Motor Neurone Disease
Motor neurone disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement. This leads to a gradual weakening and wasting of muscles. As MND advances, it can impair a person’s ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe, though it typically does not affect cognitive functions.
