Tragedy Strikes Weeks Before Wedding

Six weeks before her planned wedding, Hannah Carnat-Gronnerud faced unimaginable loss when her fiancé, Ian, died in a sudden workplace accident on July 17, 2025, at the age of 31. ‘I received a call that shattered my world—absolutely devastating,’ Hannah shared. ‘You never imagine something like this happening to you.’

Hannah and Ian had shared nearly seven years together, capturing their journey through photos and videos on social media. ‘I’m grateful for those recordings,’ she reflected. ‘Even though revisiting them brings pain, I cherish the time we had.’

Honoring Love Amid Grief

Rather than cancel their wedding plans, Hannah gathered loved ones for the weekend event. She wore her wedding dress to celebrate the bond they shared. Supporting her was wedding planner and friend Nellie Horvat of Chamred Events, who described the abrupt change from joy to sorrow. ‘We were discussing cakes one moment, and the next, I learned of this tragedy,’ Nellie said. ‘It felt like my heart stopped.’

Grieving Out Loud and Building Connections

As Hannah navigates life without Ian, she emphasizes ‘grieving out loud’ as key to her recovery. ‘Grief is a universal yet deeply personal experience—confusing, overwhelming, and debilitating,’ she explained. ‘Trusting yourself and your support network is essential.’

Approaching Valentine’s Day, Hannah sought companionship and wondered if other widows felt isolated. She posted a video online inviting women, especially those grieving, to connect. ‘The outpouring of support has been overwhelming,’ she noted. ‘People from across Canada and the U.S. have stepped up both virtually and in person.’

This response led Hannah and Nellie to organize a free Valentine’s Day gathering for women and widows. ‘Sharing vulnerabilities online isn’t for everyone,’ Hannah advised. ‘But expressing your needs to those nearby can lead to stronger support.’

‘I’m inspired by Hannah’s resilience,’ Nellie added. ‘Turning her pain into something meaningful takes real strength—not everyone could do that.’

A Space for Healing and Acceptance

The event aims to foster a supportive environment, not to erase loss but to welcome all emotions. ‘I want attendees to feel safe, accepted, and embraced, whether they’re grieving or simply seeking connection,’ Hannah said. ‘It’s a place to be authentic.’

The Women and Widows’ Valentine’s Day gathering takes place in Calgary on February 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Registration is available on Hannah Carnat-Gronnerud’s Instagram page @thatgrlhannah.
