Carrick Lifts Amorim Ban: Man Utd Players Gain Extra Rest

Published on

Michael Carrick has reversed Ruben Amorim’s strict policy, allowing Manchester United players not on international duty to enjoy additional time off during the current break.

Background on Amorim’s Rule

Early in Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United, an international break significantly reduced training squad numbers. Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, overlooked by their national teams, took a brief trip to the United States. The Portuguese coach disapproved and implemented a ban on overseas travel for non-selected players.

Amorim stated: “Would I set a different structure? Yes, for sure. But we cannot put this on the players. They [United] told them they have five days off so they can fly anywhere because nobody in the club says you cannot fly. So we cannot, this time, put that on Rash or Case.”

Carrick’s Policy Change

Amorim departed after 14 months in charge, paving the way for Carrick to step in. As the March international break unfolds, players represent their countries in World Cup qualifiers and friendlies. Carrick now works with the remaining squad at Carrington but has lifted the holiday restriction.

Due to the fixture calendar, non-internationals receive extended rest. Typically, international stars return to training by the end of next week. However, with FA Cup quarter-finals set for the following weekend and United not participating, Carrick grants the full squad a break.

The team’s last match occurred on Friday, March 20, with the next fixture scheduled for April 13. This creates four clear weekends. Players not on duty trained until Thursday, March 26, before getting the weekend off.

Boost for Injured Stars

This rest period offers a key advantage for players recovering from injuries ahead of the season’s final stretch. Matthijs de Ligt builds fitness for a potential return, while Patrick Dorgu aims to feature before the campaign ends.
