Celtic Faces Intense Pressure in Old Firm Derby at Ibrox

Celtic’s Recent Struggles Heighten Stakes

Celtic enters today’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox under significant pressure following a mixed season. Despite claims from midfielder Luke McCowan that no team in Scotland matches Celtic at their best, the champions have struggled against top opposition. This season, Celtic has recorded zero wins, two draws, and three losses against league leaders Hearts and Rangers.

Additional defeats came against Motherwell, Hibs, Dundee, and Dundee United, alongside a cup final loss to St Mirren, who fight relegation. Callum McGregor, the team captain, emphasizes a siege mentality, suggesting external forces aim to undermine the squad.

Managerial and Tactical Challenges

Martin O’Neill, returning for his second stint as manager, highlights dressing-room unity and improved football. However, recent results show last-minute victories against lower-table sides like Dundee, Livingston, and Kilmarnock, before a home loss to Hibs exposed vulnerabilities.

Club decisions, such as selling Kyogo Furuhashi for £10 million without a replacement, and appointments like Paul Tisdale and Wilfried Nancy, have drawn scrutiny. Fan frustrations peaked with statements from figures like Ross Desmond and a late-night club announcement in September.

Pre-Match Tensions and Referee Debates

Rangers manager Danny Rohl questioned Celtic’s effort in their midweek Europa League match against Stuttgart and commented on their goalkeeping options ahead of the game. O’Neill responded sharply, defending his strategy while criticizing Rohl’s coaching experience and fan-like behavior.

O’Neill, celebrating his 74th birthday today—nearly 25 years since his last Celtic stint across Glasgow—also addressed performance consistency and refereeing. Celtic has voiced concerns over VAR decisions, particularly red cards to Auston Trusty.

In the Hibs match, Trusty received a sending-off for striking Jamie McGrath’s arm at a set-piece, initially overlooked by referee Matthew MacDermid but intervened by VAR Grant Irvine. Celtic’s appeal failed, prompting a statement: ‘While we await the written judgment, this and other decisions in the match and in other recent games demonstrate a serious issue with VAR and its current deployment, which needs urgently reviewed.’

Earlier, against Hearts, Trusty denied a clear goalscoring opportunity to Pierre Landry Kabore, warranting the red card. O’Neill referenced both incidents this week.

Today’s High-Stakes Encounter

Referee John Beaton, who was in the VAR room for the Hearts game, officiates today with Steven McLean on VAR. Both teams remain in title contention with 10 games left, but Celtic must improve against rivals to match their rhetoric.

McCowan and McGregor’s confidence faces a stern test at Ibrox, where Celtic appears eager for a battle amid accusations of external biases and officiating distrust—issues shared across clubs. The visitors carry the burden to deliver a strong performance.
