Charlie’s Angels Curse: 9 Divorces, Cancer, Cold Case Murder

Published on

The iconic TV series Charlie’s Angels captivated audiences with glamorous female detectives tackling crimes, but the original stars endured profound personal tragedies off-screen. These include nearly a dozen divorces, multiple cancer diagnoses, and unsolved murders. Recently, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Cheryl Ladd reunited for the show’s 50th anniversary, sharing an emotional moment. Jackson referred to her co-stars as “my sisters,” while Ladd noted they “really cared for each other” and “were there for each other” through heartbreaking challenges, including the early death of co-star Farrah Fawcett.

Airing for five seasons until 1981, the series consistently ranked in the Top 10 ratings and pioneered an all-female cast “chasing danger instead of getting rescued,” as Smith described. Despite criticism labeling it “jiggle TV,” the show’s legacy persists amid whispers of a “Charlie’s Angels curse.”

Farrah Fawcett’s Tumultuous Romances and Tragedies

Fawcett rose to fame as Jill Munroe, exiting after one season amid a strained marriage to Lee Majors. Their union ended in divorce in 1982 after nine years, reportedly due to Majors expecting her full attention post-filming. She then entered a 30-year on-and-off relationship with Ryan O’Neal, with whom she had son Redmond. O’Neal’s stepdaughter Tatum claimed he was physically abusive, stating, “He had a terrible temper and was very violent, he beat her up.”

A brief romance with filmmaker James Orr ended in 1998 after his arrest for assaulting her. Fawcett battled rectal cancer starting in 2006; it returned as stage four the next year, spreading to her liver. She passed away at 62 in 2009. Her ex Greg Lott described her final years with O’Neal as “just Hollywood fantasy” for image maintenance, noting he received $100,000 in her will while O’Neal got nothing.

Redmond has struggled with heroin addiction, facing multiple arrests. In 2018, charges included attempted murder for stabbing two men and robbing a store. Deemed incompetent for trial in 2019, he entered psychiatric care. He recently appeared in court sporting devil horn tattoos on his forehead, linking his issues to witnessing his parents’ fights—even threatening self-harm with a knife at age six.

Jaclyn Smith’s Multiple Marriages and Family Loss

Smith, the sole actress in all 115 episodes as Kelly Garrett, weathered four marriages. Her first with actor Roger Davis lasted seven years until 1975; she felt she had “lost sight of myself.” The second, to Dennis Cole, ended after three years amid his jealousy over her fame: “All the publicity contributed to the breakup. A man doesn’t want competition.”

Her third marriage to director Anthony Richmond produced two children but dissolved after seven years. Tragedy struck in 1991 when stepson Joe Cole, 30, was fatally shot in the face by robbers outside his California home after they found only $50. The case remains unsolved.

Smith’s current marriage to surgeon Brad Allen, begun in 1997, endured her 2003 breast cancer diagnosis. Initially panicked, she opted for lumpectomy and radiation after his support. Now 80, she remains cancer-free for over 20 years.

Kate Jackson’s Career Setbacks and Health Struggles

Jackson portrayed Sabrina Duncan for three seasons before dismissal over demands for external roles, including missing Kramer vs. Kramer. Her marriages—to Andrew Stevens (three years), David Greenwald, and Tom Hart (both two years)—failed quickly. She reflected, “I was looking for real commitment in all the wrong places,” and quipped post-divorce, “I felt as if my ex-husband drove up to my bank account with a Brink’s truck.”

Battling cancer in 1987 and 1989, she underwent lumpectomy, radiation, and partial mastectomy, confronting mortality: “I had to decide whether I wanted to live or die. And if I chose life, as I did, it’s never the same.” Retiring to Virginia in the 1990s, she sued her financial advisor in 2010 for $4.4 million losses, settling privately. Now 77, she last acted in 2007.

Cheryl Ladd’s Professional Pressures and Personal Battles

Ladd replaced Fawcett as Kris Munroe, calling the show “the best of times and the worst of times.” She divorced David Ladd in 1980 after eight years, blaming grueling hours that exposed “weaknesses in relationships.” Her marriage to Brian Russell, started in 1981, faced menopause strains: “I was suffering. It really puts a strain on good marriages… I wasn’t sleeping at all and I was so sensitive emotionally.” Hormone therapy and lifestyle changes helped.

At 74, Ladd recently disclosed recovering from breast cancer. She also revealed early career harassment by executives, including being “chased around one desk” at 19, which she rejected.
