Chelsea Crushed 3-0 by Brighton: Out-Run in 34 Straight Games

Published on

The final whistle after Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton revealed a fractured squad. Manager Liam Rosenior offered apologies to frustrated supporters who demanded his dismissal throughout the second half. Captain Enzo Fernandez, despite earlier hints of a potential transfer, simply shrugged toward the traveling fans.

A banner reading ‘We Want BlueCo Out’ appeared from the away section, with co-owner Behdad Eghbali watching from the stands. This came just a week after Eghbali expressed confidence: “We think Rosenior can be successful long-term.”

Dismal Defensive Effort

Chelsea’s woes began early, as Kaoru Mitoma forced a save from Robert Sanchez within two minutes, dictating the game’s tempo. The Blues showed little aggression, waiting 32 minutes for their first tackle. By halftime, 10 of 11 starters had recorded zero tackles.

Chelsea have now been out-run by every Premier League opponent in 34 consecutive matches. High possession—often a hallmark under former boss Enzo Maresca—explains some of this, as opponents chase more. Yet Chelsea rank among the league’s most out-run teams, all struggling this season. The Blues risk dropping into the bottom half of the table by week’s end.

Growing Rift Between Coach and Players

Rosenior labeled his team’s habits “indefensible, unprofessional, and unacceptable.” Defender Trevoh Chalobah disagreed: “I think the boys were running their socks off. If you look in the dressing room, everyone is tired. It’s nothing to do with effort. We gave it our all. We got beat today.”

Brighton covered seven kilometers more than Chelsea. Rosenior acknowledged the apparent divide: “Judging off that performance, it looks that way. I won’t lie, that was unacceptable. I don’t feel there’s a disconnect between me and the players. We work very closely with them in training, individual meetings, team meetings. We are giving everything to the players. There is a lack of spirit, lack of belief.”

Attack Lacks Potency

Chelsea have failed to score in four straight Premier League games, extending to no shots on target in the fifth. Their first-half Expected Goals (xG) of 0.04 marked a low under Maresca’s 114 halves in charge, signaling regression.

Injuries sidelined Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Estevao, but this £1 billion squad includes proven talents like Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, and summer signing Liam Delap. Rosenior faces scrutiny for underperforming compared to Maresca’s tenure, especially after switching to a 5-3-2 formation before reverting to 4-2-3-1 at halftime—a move that appeared desperate.

Intense Pressure Mounts

Former player Tim Sherwood noted: “It’s a really tough job for any manager to survive this environment. Chelsea is a development club.”

Brighton Model Backfires

Chelsea’s post-takeover strategy mirrors Brighton’s success: hiring ex-Seagulls sporting director Paul Winstanley, poaching players and staff, and trusting youth. Rosenior, the second Brighton alum at the helm after Graham Potter, oversaw a humiliating loss to the team they emulate—highlighting Chelsea’s rebuild struggles and the urgent need for redirection.
