Clayton Oliver Regrets Late Giants Move, Manages Crohn’s Ahead of Debut

Oliver Reflects on Trade and New Beginnings

Clayton Oliver wishes he had joined the GWS Giants years earlier. On the eve of his debut, the 28-year-old midfielder shares that sentiment while preparing at Giants headquarters. A quick boat chat with teammate Jake Stringer early in the trade period highlighted the appeal of Sydney, just a day after a meeting with Melbourne’s new coach shifted his path. The Giants secured Oliver for a future third-round pick, with Melbourne covering half his salary through 2030.

“I wish I had done it a couple of years ago as well. It would have been nice. I should have come up in 2023,” Oliver said with a wry smile. His career at Melbourne derailed in 2023 due to a hamstring injury, knee issues, personal challenges, and off-field scrutiny that led to indefinite leave. A broken hand followed in 2024, and a potential Geelong move fell through before Melbourne’s new leadership prompted his exit.

Oliver acknowledges past errors but focuses forward. “I had a good eight years at Melbourne; the last two weren’t great. I’m happy playing footy again in a good spot,” he said. “They wanted a different direction, which is fine.”

Managing Crohn’s Disease for Peak Performance

A mid-2023 Crohn’s disease diagnosis coincided with his hamstring woes, but Oliver now manages the chronic digestive condition effectively. Working with Giants dietitian Mel Juergens, he follows a strict regimen avoiding gluten, lactose, fructose, and more, plus weekly injections.

“It’s a bit annoying. I can’t eat too much,” Oliver explained. “Everyone’s battling something; I’m not the only one. I take it in my stride.” The tailored plan, refined through trial and error, leaves him feeling stronger than in years. “It’s the best I’ve felt training in ages, purely from Mel,” he added. Crohn’s affects about 100,000 Australians differently, requiring personalized strategies.

Elite Midfield Craft and Team Impact

Giants captain Toby Greene praises Oliver’s stoppage work as top-tier over the past decade. “He’ll build into the year. He’s a good player,” Greene said. Oliver’s 2021-22 dominance included a premiership, Norm Smith votes, back-to-back best-and-fairest awards, All-Australian honors, third in Brownlow, and coaches’ awards.

With Tom Green’s season-ending knee injury early in preseason, Oliver becomes vital. His contest-to-contest speed and drive from stoppages suit new rules for quicker ball-ups. “I was shattered” about Green’s injury, Oliver said, but the team steps up. He eyes a return to form through team success: “No point being good in a bad team.”

Settling into Sydney Life

Sharing a Paddington home with former Melbourne teammate Toby Bedford, Oliver enjoys Sydney’s lower profile. “I love walking around as a normal person—it’s underrated,” he said. After a decade of scrutiny, the anonymity refreshes him. He dreams of a Giants flag at the MCG: “I wouldn’t mind one at the ‘G.”
