Clothing Images Released in Search for Hamish Tait’s Alleged Victims

Published on

Investigators have released images of children’s clothing in a renewed effort to identify further alleged victims of former childcare worker Hamish Tait. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) are appealing to the public for assistance, hoping that the distinctive items may be recognised by parents, carers, or the wider community. The images, which include a dinosaur puffer jacket, patterned shorts, and two different T-shirts, were reportedly discovered on electronic devices seized during the investigation into Mr. Tait.

Investigation into Hamish Tait’s Alleged Crimes

Hamish Tait, 35, faces a significant number of charges, with allegations spanning the creation and distribution of child abuse material. These alleged offences are believed to have occurred between 2018 and 2023 at various childcare centres, primarily located in Sydney’s north-west, including Rouse Hill and Putney. Police have identified 62 childcare centres that Mr. Tait either worked at or visited, raising concerns about the potential scope of his alleged activities.

Mr. Tait has been in custody since his arrest and subsequent charging in July 2025. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement officials seized approximately 2.5 million files from electronic devices found at his residence. Initially facing eight counts related to online child abuse material offences, the number of charges against him has escalated significantly. Through April, June, and July of 2026, additional charges were laid, bringing the total to 329. These charges include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent.

Identifying Potential Victims

A critical aspect of the ongoing investigation is the identification of all alleged victims. Police believe that 22 of the 158 potential victims have yet to be identified. It is acknowledged that some of these individuals may now be adults. The release of the clothing images is a strategic move by detectives to jog the memories of those who might have seen these items before or know their owners. The hope is that recognition of these specific garments will lead to crucial information that can help identify and support any uncontacted victims.

Detective Acting Inspector Emmanuel Tsardoulias of the AFP has urged anyone with any information, regardless of how small it may seem, to come forward. He acknowledged the distressing nature of the investigation, stating, “We understand this week’s news about Operation Moonbi has been tough for members of our community. The abuse of trust we allege has occurred is confronting.” He further expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation and support as the investigation progresses.

Childcare Provider’s Response

Several of the childcare centres implicated in the investigation are operated by the provider Fit Kidz. In response to the allegations, Fit Kidz issued a statement expressing profound distress. “We are shocked, disgusted, saddened and sorry for the pain that has been caused,” the statement read. The company emphasized its commitment to child safety, adding, “Our focus has always been and will continue to be supporting those affected and strengthening the safety of children entrusted to us.”

Legal Developments and Public Appeal

A non-publication order, initially granted to the AFP to safeguard the integrity of the investigation, was lifted on Monday following a legal challenge. This lifting of the order has now permitted the public release of the clothing images and further details of the case. The AFP is committed to a thorough investigation and is relying on community vigilance to help uncover the full extent of the alleged offences and to provide support to all affected individuals.

The investigation, codenamed Operation Moonbi, highlights the complexities and sensitivities involved in cases of alleged child abuse. The release of these specific items of clothing represents a direct appeal to the public’s memory and sense of community responsibility. Authorities are hopeful that this measure will yield significant breakthroughs in identifying all potential victims and ensuring accountability.
