Club Cricketer Accused of Cheating in ‘Clicky Ponting’ Scandal

Published on

A club cricketer in northern England is facing scrutiny over allegations of unsportsmanlike conduct after footage emerged of him allegedly clicking his fingers to deceive umpires into giving batters out. Brian Devine, a veteran player for Saltburn Cricket Club’s second XI, has been nicknamed “Clicky Ponting” by some media outlets, a moniker referencing former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. The controversy centers on accusations that Devine intentionally clicked his fingers near the wicketkeeper during matches, aiming to mimic the sound of a catch and mislead umpires into ruling batters out caught behind.

Allegations Surface in North Yorkshire League

The alleged incidents occurred in division two of the North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League. Video evidence circulating online appears to show Devine employing this tactic in several games. Opponents have expressed dismay, with one describing it as the “worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen.” The allegations have gained significant attention beyond the local league, drawing commentary from prominent figures in the cricket world and beyond.

Prominent Figures Condemn Alleged Cheating

Former international cricketer Dale Steyn reacted to the news by labeling Devine a “click clown.” British broadcaster Piers Morgan also weighed in on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Morgan, who had previously been critical of Australian cricketers during the 2023 Ashes series, posted multiple times about the alleged deception. He suggested that Devine and his teammates at Saltburn CC may have been engaged in this practice for an extended period, calling it “shameful” and “pathetic”, especially in the context of amateur cricket. Morgan questioned the longevity and impact of Devine’s alleged actions, asking how many players’ games might have been unfairly ended.

Investigation Launched and Statistical Analysis

In response to the growing controversy, the NYSD Premier Cricket League announced on Monday evening that it had initiated a comprehensive investigation into the matter. As of the time of reporting, no findings or official statements beyond the launch of the inquiry had been released. Attempts to contact the league, Saltburn Cricket Club, and Brian Devine for comment were ongoing.

The unusual nature of the allegations has spurred detailed analysis among cricket enthusiasts. One X account, “@maxtempers”, compiled statistics comparing the number of catches taken by Saltburn’s second XI wicketkeepers in matches where Devine played versus those where he did not. The analysis reportedly indicated a significant difference, with the wicketkeeper claiming 39 catches in 13 matches with Devine involved, compared to only five catches in seven matches without him. This statistical comparison has been presented as potential supporting evidence for the claims.

Devine’s Background and Workplace

Brian Devine is identified as a financial manager and company secretary for Northallerton Auctions
