Restaurant Seeks Public’s Help After ‘Dine and Dash’ Incident

A couple allegedly fled a restaurant after consuming a substantial meal, including 14 Baby Guinness shots, and leaving without settling a bill totaling over £230. The incident occurred at The Halfway House in Brentwood, Essex, on May 16.

Premeditated Plan Suspected

CCTV footage captured the couple arriving and being seated by a server. Their request to move to a table closer to the rear exit has led the general manager, Deanne Perkins, to suspect their departure was pre-arranged. The pair reportedly ordered two steaks, several appetizers, sides, ice cream, and the notable 14 Baby Guinness shots.

Ms. Perkins, 45, expressed surprise at the amount consumed, noting that most patrons struggle to finish the generous portion sizes. The couple reportedly cleared their plates before the woman exited through the front of the establishment, seemingly engaged in a phone conversation. Subsequently, the man was observed checking for staff presence before leaving through the back door.

External cameras then recorded the couple running across the car park, having failed to pay their £231.30 bill.

Woman Returns, Man Still at Large

Following the incident, Ms. Perkins reported the event to the police and shared the surveillance footage online to alert other local businesses. She stated that the woman later returned and paid £90, covering her portion of the meal. However, the man has not returned to settle the remaining £141.30.

According to Ms. Perkins, upon her return, the woman claimed her male companion was unaware she had left without paying.

Disappointment for Small Business

Ms. Perkins described the couple as appearing to be “normal” and expressed her dismay at their actions, particularly given the challenges faced by small businesses. She highlighted the supportive response from the public and regular customers since the footage was released.

An Essex police spokesperson confirmed they are seeking a man in connection with a report of making off without payment from a business in West Horndon on May 16.

This incident follows a series of similar ‘dine and dash’ events reported across the UK in recent times.
