Undiagnosed ADHD Linked to Star’s Past Struggles
Television personality Darren Day has revealed a life-altering diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), confirmed in February 2025. The 57-year-old entertainer, known for his appearance on the inaugural season of the jungle reality show in 2002, is still processing the revelation but acknowledges it provides clarity on his well-documented struggles with addiction.
Speaking about his journey, Day explained that the mental health challenges he experienced in recent years were previously attributed to his history of substance abuse. “I always thought [my mental health issues] were because of the years of drinking and taking drugs,” he stated. “That’s why my head is wonky.” However, his current support team, comprised of leading experts, offered a different perspective: that his drug and alcohol use may have been an attempt to self-medicate underlying mental health conditions.
“That blew my mind,” Day admitted. He was keen to emphasize that this perspective does not absolve him of responsibility for his past actions. “It’s difficult really, because sometimes I worry about saying that because to certain people who don’t understand addiction or understand mental health – I completely get why that sounds just like a really good excuse, for going off the rails.” He drew a parallel to the lack of understanding surrounding blackouts experienced by alcoholics, acknowledging that some might perceive a mental health diagnosis as a convenient explanation for past behavior.
A Path to Sobriety and New Beginnings
At the height of his addiction, Day was unaware of any underlying conditions. He has been sober for approximately seven years, following a significant relapse during the pandemic that involved a week-long cocaine binge. He reported being given six months to live if he did not seek help. Day credits musician Robbie Williams with intervening and facilitating his entry into rehabilitation, a life-saving act he aims to pay forward.
“I take sobriety incredibly seriously and I try and help other people in the same way as Robbie helped me,” he shared. With his life and career now stabilized, Day is preparing for a role he describes as a “dream.” He is set to portray legendary record producer Sam Phillips in the musical Million Dollar Quartet.
A Musical Journey and a Dream Role
The musical chronicles a pivotal moment in music history when icons Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley converged for an impromptu jam session. Day ed a lifelong admiration for Elvis Presley and recounted a personal pilgrimage to Graceland for his 50th birthday, where he visited Sun Records and stood on the spot where the famous jam session took place. “So I was there never imagining I would ever get to be a part of this,” he reflected.
Regarding the casting, Day noted the significant pressure on the actors portraying the musical legends. “There’s more pressure on the four boys playing Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lewis because unless you are an ardent fan of those days, people don’t really know what Sam Phillips looked like or sounded like. So, there’s less pressure on me,” he said with a laugh.
