Dave Challinor: Stockport’s Playoff Veteran Eyes Promotion

Published on

Dave Challinor boasts unmatched experience in playoff campaigns, positioning Stockport County for a strong push toward the Championship. The 50-year-old manager, who played 91 games as a center-back for the club, enters his 12th playoff series across levels from the Northern Premier League to League One.

Challinor’s Proven Playoff Track Record

For 15 of his 16 managerial seasons with teams including Colwyn Bay, Fylde, Hartlepool, and Stockport, Challinor’s squads secured playoff spots or better. The lone exception occurred during a mid-season move in 2019-20. Challinor reflects, “I’ve been through absolutely everything. I’ve won and lost eliminators, won and lost semi-finals and finals, won and lost on penalties. I’ve even had goalkeepers score against me.”

Stockport kicks off their League One playoff semi-final first leg away at Stevenage on Saturday. Challinor never anticipated such consistent success. “It’s something I never thought would happen,” he says. “Over the course of my career I’ve been at places that have had ambition to move forward. But if someone had told me at the start of my managerial career that would be the case I’d have said: ‘You’re daft.’”

Old-School Demands Drive Player Performance

Players praise Challinor’s throwback approach, emphasizing high standards and accountability. Veteran midfielder Oliver Norwood, a Manchester United academy product who thrived under Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, highlights this. “He’s obviously doing something right,” Norwood says of Challinor’s record. “He makes demands of you, he doesn’t accept rubbish, he demands that players drag everything out of themselves to be successful. Sometimes players may not like the truth being told. The game has changed a lot, and people are a lot more sensitive, but there’s still a place in football for holding people accountable, and that’s what the manager does.”

Playoff Chaos: Form Matters Little

Challinor stresses that regular-season form fades in playoffs. Stockport finished third in League One after a dramatic final-day 3-1 win at Barnsley, despite two league losses to Stevenage this season. Last year, they dominated Leyton Orient in the semis but missed key chances in extra time and fell on penalties.

“You’re in a four-team tournament where any team can have an argument to say they deserve to get promoted,” Challinor notes. “But it’s not about deserving – as we found out last year. We played really well but sometimes things can go against you. Hopefully this year will be our year. We’re doing everything to make sure that’s the case.”

He views the playoffs as a fresh start. “This is very much a separate entity. We’ve played 46 league games and finished third in the table – fantastic. We now move to a four-team competition to become a Championship team. It’s almost like the 46 games don’t count for a great deal.”

Stockport’s Rapid Rise Under Smart Leadership

Stockport aims for the Championship, a level neither Challinor nor the club has reached recently— their last stint ended 24 years ago. Since Challinor’s 2021 arrival, alongside owner Mark Stott and chief executive Simon Wilson, the Hatters climbed from National League North seven years ago. Their Carrington training ground displays the motto: “Behave like a big team.”

“This was a blank canvas and in terms of success it couldn’t have gone any better,” Challinor says. “It’s almost been followed to the dot, which is a massive credit to him [Wilson]. Everything that’s needed to be ticked off has been, really.”

Challinor’s playoff savvy keeps him composed. “The playoffs can bring all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff. When you’ve not been involved in them before that can be a shock. Everything is on the line here. There are so many things that go on, I think you have to expect the unexpected.” His Hartlepool side exemplified this in 2021, winning the National League playoff final on penalties against Torquay despite a goalkeeper’s late equalizer.
