Declan Rice’s Pre-Match Ritual Fuels England’s World Cup Hopes

Published on

As England prepares to kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign against Croatia this evening, the intense pressure of the opening fixture is palpable. The memory of the 2018 semi-final defeat still lingers, making this encounter particularly significant. Amidst the anticipation, players are turning to their established pre-match routines, with midfielder Declan Rice highlighting a deeply ingrained superstition that he believes is key to securing victory.

A Lucky Charm on His Feet

Rice, a key figure for the Three Lions, has previously revealed a strict adherence to wearing a specific pair of trainers with his tracksuit before every match. He confessed that without these particular shoes, he harbors a genuine fear that the team “won’t win.” This deeply ingrained superstition is a testament to the psychological aspect of professional football, where players often rely on familiar habits to build confidence.

In a brief video segment, it was noted that “Footballers are a very superstitious bunch. From putting socks on in a certain order to wearing lucky underwear, sticking to winning habits is fully part of the routine for pros, and Declan Rice is no exception.” The trainers in question, a black pair, hold significant personal “history” for Rice. He explained, “In my mind, if I don’t wear them, I don’t think we’re gonna win.” He openly acknowledged being “proper superstitious” as the driving force behind this consistent choice.

The Power of the Pancake

Beyond footwear, Rice also adheres to a precise pre-match meal: four pancakes served with syrup or honey. This dietary guidance comes from the nutritionist at his Premier League club, Arsenal. Rice ed surprise at how widely this simple meal has been adopted by other players, noting its significant impact on his energy levels.

“Honestly, it’s been a game-changer. I don’t understand the science behind it, what’s in them or anything like that, but it gives me such a high energy boost,” Rice stated. High energy is undeniably crucial for the England squad as they aim for success in the tournament.

Squad Preparations and Challenges

The England squad has been acclimatizing in the United States for over two weeks in preparation for the World Cup. However, their preparations have faced a setback with the withdrawal of Tino Livramento due to a calf injury, leading to Trevoh Chalobah being called up as a replacement. Manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keeping his starting XI selection close to his chest, with four positions still undecided hours before kickoff.

An estimated 10,000 England supporters are expected to be in attendance in Dallas, Texas, to cheer on the team. The hope is that the combined efforts of the players and the unwavering support of the fans, perhaps even aided by Rice’s lucky trainers, will lead to a victorious start for England.
