Australian tennis player Destanee Aiava announces her retirement at the end of the season, citing a “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile” culture in the sport. The 25-year-old, who once peaked at world No. 147 as a teenager, compares tennis to a “toxic boyfriend” and delivers a strong message to those who undermined her.
Strong Words on Instagram
Aiava shares her frustrations in a candid Instagram post. “I want to say a ginormous f— you to everyone in the tennis community who’s ever made me feel less than,” she declares. She targets gamblers sending hate or death threats, social media trolls critiquing her body and career, and the sport’s hidden issues.
“Behind the white outfits and traditions is a culture that’s racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mould,” Aiava states. She emphasizes that the sport fails to welcome diverse individuals.
Career Overview
Currently ranked world No. 321, the Melbourne native advanced to the second round of the 2025 Australian Open. There, she fell to Danielle Collins in a three-set match, during which the American drew boos for blowing kisses to the crowd. As a former junior prodigy, Aiava reflects on the toll tennis took on her body image, health, family ties, and self-worth.
Moving Forward
Aiava, turning 26 this year, chooses to start anew in 2027. “Life is not meant to be lived in misery and half assed,” she says. Her goal is daily fulfillment in her pursuits. “I’m 25, turning 26 this year and I feel so far behind everyone else, like I’m starting from scratch. I’m also scared. But that’s better than living a life that’s misaligned, or being around constant comparison and losing yourself.”
