Developer’s Emotional Outburst Halts Fatal Boat Crash Trial
A Florida real estate developer, George Pino, 54, experienced significant emotional distress in court on Tuesday, the second day of his trial. This occurred just a day after a similar episode forced a halt to proceedings. Pino faces charges of manslaughter and felony vessel homicide in connection with a 2022 boat crash that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez.
Pino was piloting a boat with his daughter’s friends aboard when the collision occurred. The incident also led to permanent injuries for Katerina Puig, 18, and maimed several other passengers.
Trial Paused Amidst Defendant’s Emotional Breakdown
On Monday, the trial was suspended after Pino exhibited an emotional breakdown, weeping in the courtroom. Footage of this incident circulated widely on social media. The jury was dismissed for the remainder of the day following the outburst.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, Pino again struggled to maintain composure. His attorney, Howard Srebnick, was observed offering comfort and support. The second emotional display coincided with the testimony of Lucy Fernandez’s father, Andres Fernandez.
Father Recounts Tragic Search for Daughter
Andres Fernandez, who stated he had known Pino for years and that their daughters had grown up together, described his frantic efforts to locate his daughter after hearing about the crash. He recounted searching for hours before ultimately finding Lucy’s body in the water. Attendees in the courtroom were visibly moved during his testimony.
Prosecution and Defense Statements Interrupted by Outburst
Pino’s breakdown on Monday occurred shortly after prosecutor Laura Adams concluded her opening statements and as his defense attorney began presenting arguments. Observing Pino’s distress, Adams requested a delay, deeming his emotional reaction inappropriate for the jury.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez concurred, instructing Pino’s attorney to ensure his client could control himself. The judge emphasized that such emotional displays were not proper for jurors to witness and ordered the jury’s removal from the courtroom.
Health Concerns Raised by Defense Counsel
Pino stepped out to compose himself. His lead attorney, Howard Srebnick, expressed concerns about his client’s well-being to the judge, stating, “I don’t think he’s well.”
Following a brief recess, Miami Fire Rescue personnel evaluated Pino. The judge subsequently agreed to dismiss the jury for the day, with opening statements scheduled to resume Tuesday morning.
Details of the Fatal 2022 Boat Crash
The fatal crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Luciana ‘Lucy’ Fernandez. Katerina Puig, who was 18 at the time, sustained debilitating and permanent injuries that will impact her ability to live independently.
Investigation revealed that Pino was piloting a 29-foot Robalo vessel at approximately 50 miles per hour near Boca Chita Key when the boat struck a channel marker. The incident occurred on September 4, 2022, while Pino and his wife, Cecilia Pino, were hosting several teenage girls for their daughter’s 18th birthday party. The attendees were reportedly lifelong friends of Carolina Pino and students at local academies.
Pino reportedly stated that another boat created a large wake, and while he turned to check on the girls, he hit the marker. The impact ejected all occupants from the boat and caused a significant hole in its side, injuring 11 passengers. Six were hospitalized, and Fernandez later died from her injuries.
