NFL reporter Dianna Russini has stepped down from The Athletic just days after photos surfaced showing her with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort. The images, taken prior to the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix on March 29, triggered an internal review at the New York Times-owned outlet.
Reasons for Resignation
In a letter to Athletic executive editor Steven Ginsberg, Russini emphasized her commitment to professional NFL coverage. “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” she wrote. Initially supported by the outlet, Russini cited escalating media speculation and leaks as reasons to resign before her contract ends on June 30.
“Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now… I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” Russini stated.
Background and Context
Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 following nearly a decade at ESPN, where she served as a SportsCenter anchor, NFL analyst, and insider. She also hosted a podcast and appeared on the outlet’s video platform for the company.
Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married, addressed the photos publicly. Russini clarified that the images “don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day.” Vrabel described the interaction as “completely innocent” and dismissed other suggestions as “laughable.”
Vrabel skipped the Patriots’ pre-draft news conference on Monday amid the developments.
Internal Investigation Continues
Ginsberg noted initial concerns but an instinct to support Russini during the review. “When this situation was brought to our attention last week, there were clear concerns, but we received a detailed explanation,” he told staff. As new details emerged, the investigation expanded, leading to her resignation while still underway.

Vrabel’s Coaching Record
Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl winner as a player with New England, heads into his second season leading the Patriots. He earned AP NFL Coach of the Year honors after a 14-3 record last season, despite a Super Bowl defeat to Seattle. He previously claimed the award with Tennessee in 2021.
