Dua Lipa’s Subtle Nod to Mother-in-Law at London Wedding
Pop superstar Dua Lipa recently exchanged vows with actor Callum Turner at London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall. The singer, 30, opted for a custom Schiaparelli skirt suit for the intimate ceremony, complemented by Christian Louboutin heels and a Bulgari snake necklace. However, it was the striking wide-brimmed hat that drew significant attention.
A Meaningful Millinery Choice
Beyond its apparent homage to Bianca Jagger’s iconic 1971 wedding headwear, the hat served as a touching tribute to Callum Turner’s mother, Rosemary. The milliner behind the creation, Stephen Jones, revealed that Rosemary has a long-standing connection to his work. She was employed at his first shop, PX, in London’s Covent Garden during the 1980s.
Jones shared his well wishes, stating, “Many congratulations to Dua Lipa and Callum, who I have known since he was a baby.” This sentiment underscores a personal link between the singer and her new mother-in-law, highlighting a connection that predates Dua’s relationship with Callum.
A Mother’s Influence
Rosemary Turner raised Callum as a single mother, reportedly on a Chelsea council estate, while harboring dreams of an acting career before working as a nightclub promoter. She is now a psychotherapist.
Callum has previously spoken about his close relationship with his mother. In an interview with The Sunday Times, he described their bond as a deep friendship, stating, “We’ve been through everything together and go through everything together.” He credited her with fostering his love for various cultural pursuits, including movies, museums, and walks in the park. He also acknowledged her role in encouraging his adventurous spirit and appetite for travel, which led him to explore the world from the age of 17.
Reflecting on the early stages of his relationship with Dua Lipa, Callum admitted to nerves surrounding their respective parents meeting. He revealed, “Of course — she wanted my mum to like her. I was nervous meeting her parents too — I wanted her parents to like me.”
An Emotional Ceremony
Sources indicate that Callum was visibly moved as Dua walked down the aisle for their legal ceremony. Reports suggest he was “in tears and shaky” as he saw his bride. The private ceremony was attended by a small group of eight guests, including Dua’s parents, Dukagjin and Anesa, and her siblings, Rina and Gjin.
The newlyweds departed the registry office in a black cab, reportedly to enjoy a quiet family dinner. This intimate ceremony precedes a larger, three-day celebration planned in Sicily.
Anticipation for the Sicilian Celebration
The upcoming Sicilian wedding is anticipated to be a high-profile event, with celebrity guests reportedly including Sir Elton John, Mark Ronson, and Charli XCX, alongside fashion figures like Donatella Versace and Simon Porte Jacquemus. Dua is also rumored to be wearing a custom Atelier Versace gown, given her close relationship with the designer.
Dua Lipa has previously expressed her excitement about her engagement, telling British Vogue, “Yeah we’re engaged. It’s very exciting… This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don’t know, be best friends forever — it’s a really special feeling.”
The singer has also shared her aspirations for starting a family, though she acknowledges the challenges of balancing motherhood with her demanding music career. “I’d love to have kids one day,” she stated, adding, “But it’s like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time – how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I’d have to take.”
Meanwhile, Callum Turner is reportedly a strong contender for the role of James Bond, with sources suggesting he has been telling friends the part is his, making it one of the most talked-about potential casting choices in recent times.
