Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s Sicilian Wedding Venue Has Troubled History
Pop sensation Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner are set to celebrate their union this week with a lavish three-day event in Sicily, culminating at the historic Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria. The idyllic setting, chosen after the couple fell in love with Palermo during a summer holiday, will host an estimated £1 million celebration. Among the expected guests are prominent figures from the entertainment world, including Elton John, Olivia Dean, Mark Ronson, and Charli XCX.
While the 18th-century villa boasts a notable presence in media, having featured in the opening credits of ‘The White Lotus’ and a Dolce & Gabbana commercial, its real-life past is significantly more complex. Originally a hub for Palermo’s intellectuals, the 100-room villa attracted the attention of the Sicilian Mafia, known as Cosa Nostra, in the 1980s.
Villa Valguarnera’s Mafia Connections
During the 1980s, the town of Bagheria, located about ten miles from Palermo, was known as Sicily’s ‘Triangle of Death’ due to a high number of mob-related homicides. Villa Valguarnera reportedly served as a discreet sanctuary for fugitive Mafia bosses, including Bernardo Provenzano and Matteo Messina Denaro. Reports indicate that during their stays, the villa suffered extensive damage, with wild animals allegedly allowed to roam freely through its gardens and interiors, including the ballroom. A significant artifact, an ancient Polifemo statue, was reportedly stolen from the garden by helicopter, and there were even plans to convert the villa into a casino.
Villa’s Transformation and Modern Reputation
By the late 1990s, the Mafia presence at the villa had ceased. Italian Princess Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca, the villa’s current owner and resident, is credited with their departure. She is now known for being more selective about who she rents the property to. The town of Bagheria has also experienced a resurgence, with locals actively working to distance themselves from its past reputation. Filippo Tripoli, the mayor of Bagheria, has commented on the town’s positive trajectory, stating, “Bagheria is bouncing back after years in which it was known for Mafia and violence, and Dua Lipa helps that process by putting it on the map for a different reason.””
Celebrations and Security Measures
Villa Valguarnera will be the primary venue for the main ceremony, with an additional civil ceremony expected to be officiated by the Mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla. The couple’s celebrations will also extend to Palazzo Gangi on Saturday, a privately owned 18th-century palazzo famed for its stunning Hall of Mirrors.
With an estimated combined net worth exceeding £100 million, the couple is sparing no expense for the three-day event. Three hundred guests are anticipated to attend, with private jet bookings at Palermo Airport and a fleet of luxury vehicles arranged to transport attendees. Extensive security measures are in place, including the hiring of private security firms and bodyguards, and all staff involved have reportedly signed non-disclosure agreements.
The choice of Sicily as a wedding destination has reportedly made the island the wedding venue of the year, with a significant increase in bookings for the Mediterranean island. Sources in Palermo have noted the considerable buzz surrounding the wedding, highlighting its anticipated glamour and the presence of numerous stars. The couple’s affection for Sicily, evident in their previous holiday and Lipa’s public support for the local football club, has also been a point of local discussion. Confidentiality surrounding the event is reportedly high, with screens erected and strict confidentiality agreements in place.
